Lucid Enables Quick Sync with Discrete Graphics on Sandy Bridge
Lucid presented a potential solution to the problem at this year’s CES. Through software alone, Lucid is able to copy the frame buffer from a discrete PCIe GPU to the frame buffer of SNB’s HD Graphics in main memory. The result is that you can hook a single monitor up to your motherboard’s video output and use a discrete GPU when you want it. Lucid’s technology would enable switchable graphics on the desktop, without any hardware requirements (it still obviously won’t work on P67, shame on Intel).
Anand Goes Hands On with Motorola's Atrix 4G Webtop
Today I was finally able to spend some time with Motorola’s Atrix 4G and its webtop dock. For those of you who don’t know, earlier in the week Motorola announced its first Tegra 2 based smartphone: the Atrix 4G. Motorola later announced another Tegra 2 based smartphone, the Droid Bionic, however the Atrix 4G is its flagship smart/superphone.
AMD and GlobalFoundries, CES 2011
Right now, GlobalFoundries is entering full production mode for 32nm, with AMD’s Llano chips scheduled to be the first market solution to use the process. Later this year, AMD will also launch their Bulldozer cores on the 32nm process. In a similar vein, the 28nm node uses the same gate stack and will leverage the learning of their x86/32nm ramp. Qualification and production of 28nm will continue over the coming year, with plenty of new 28nm devices to come. One of the interesting points GF brought up is that in the past, doing test SRAM wafers has been the common practice for ironing out the glitches in a new process. SRAM wafers produce regular grids where errors are easy to detect; the problem is that complex logic stresses the latest process technology in a different way. To further help with process refinements, GF also runs a test SoC ARM Cortex A9 microprocessor design through the pipeline. The results of this test wafer not only help them find and fix problems, but they also give a better idea of how chips on the new process perform. The following slide summarizes what they’ve seen so far.

First off, the updates on the powerline front. In addition to the single port Atheros 7400 based XAVB5001 500 Mbps powerline kit (which is already selling in Europe, but is yet to reach North American shores), we are also getting a four port version (the XAVB5004). The four port version is slated to cost just $10 more than the single port version at $169.99. With no other powerline silicon vendor having production ready 500 Mbps silicon, the AR7400 continues to get used here.
