Reaching max thermal temps with small overclock

Thread Starter
hey people, recently i was going to overclock my Q6600 to 3GHZ but i was going to get their slowly with small overclocks but i have a problem.

after changing my cpu speed to 2.8ghz from 2.4ghz i saw a problem. When testing if the overclock was stable, i realized that running prime95 for 10minutes saw my CPU temperature rise to 71degrees with core temp. all cores were around 69-71.

this really concerns me because i bought i new heat sink, COOL MASTER hyper TX3 (ino it isnt great). ino it is working because my IDLE temp at stock speeds were 37 and now it is 31 with new cpu cooler.

WHATS GOING ON!!!

Did you manually set the voltage in the BIOS?

Sounds like you left it on Auto and the Motherboard has increased it to compensate.

You need to change it to Manual. Then you can set it at what you want. I believe the Highest for a 65nm chip is ~ 1.45v though it sounds like your cooler isn't up to the job so try setting the voltage at 1.3 and seeing how far you can push the chip before you need to give it more volts.

this, and if you end up wanting a new cooler Id suggest a cooler master hyper 212 from their refurb store, cheap and good performer specially with 2 fans strapped to it

VID doesn't tend to mean too much to be honest. What voltage was it running on when it was at its stock speed?

Try using that voltage to begin with.
