The worst day in the history of my rig

Thread Starter
So last night i got a BSOD during random web surfing. That's never happened before, so i instantly thought "Oh my, the watercooling tubes must be emitting water onto my delicate computer components". So i turned my rig off and pulled it out of the desk and while there wasn't any water leaking inside the case, the inlet tube to the pump was leaking a fair bit. So i put a cloth over it and emptied out my gigantic res into a bucket. Exhausted by this draining labour, i then went to bed.

After a night full of terrifying nightmares involving computers that don't work, i awoke, clamped the tube on with two zipties and an unsuccessful piece of wire scrapped from a dead power supply, filled up the res, plugged in my second hard drive (accidentally left it unplugged last time but it's an unused spare anyway) and turned it on. Unfortunately, the pump was screaming shrilly while sucking air instead of water. With that fixed, POST took place, windows started loading, and i got a BSOD.

Nope, no leaking, just trying to boot onto an old windows 7 install on my second hard drive. Fixed hard drive priority, and finally I'm back on my desktop. Then later, i got another random "PFN_LIST_CORRUPT" BSOD. Booting back up, after a while i decided to run a memtest. This crashed soonish, which somehow rendered my PC unable to even power up properly, much less POST. Go figure. Assuming (correctly) that the RAM was at fault, i took out the second Dominator from my UD3P, and sure enough it booted up. To test if the slot was at fault instead of the RAM, i put the other remaining stick into the "possibly faulty" slot. Thankfully/Unthankfully, it didn't POST. Assuming the slot was at fault and not the DIMM, i put the two sticks in the second pair of slots, and it didn't work. So i took the "possibly faulty" stick out, and again it didn't work.

Getting slightly worried at this point, i put the "working" stick into the first, original slot that had booted up on its own, and of course, it wouldn't boot. Yes, my computer really does hate me that much. Then somehow i put the other stick back in, and now it works.

Now, I don't know whether i got the sticks messed up, or whether one of them is faulty, or whether multiple slots are faulty, but I don't really want to risk experimenting again in case that renders it unusable again. Sigh.

If anyone says TL;DR, i will rip the offender's testicles off.

My advice would to try each ram sticks in another computer and run memtest on them. This should let you know whats at fault.

good luck

I don't know what to say. But I can say this: you have my deepest sympathies. I don't know how I would have reacted to this nor do I know how I would feel right now (meaning, now that this seems to be over... hopefully). Personally, I wouldn't have been able to sleep regardless of how tiring it was. I think I probably would have worked until it was finished, ate some food, and then crashed hard.

You could borrow some ram and throw that into your rig, should give the same results... or you know, destroy that ram too

Reminds me of my old P4 rig going nuts on me. I remember narrowing it down to the mobo being faulty, and buying a replacement, along with a new PSU in the following month, but to this day I haven't figured out what exactly was wrong with it.

It's just one of those bad days, everyone has them.
