Extremely stupid and easy question about swapping parts

Thread Starter
This is an offshoot of my original post, which if you don't want to read can be summarized by saying I now have more computers that won't even try to POST (2) than ones that work (1).

So my extremely stupid question that I think I already know the answer to but want to make absolutely sure of is this...

Can putting ruined/damaged/non-working parts into a working computer ruin the working parts of that computer? For example, if I put the CPU of my non-working computer into my working computer, could that ruin the working computer in any way? Or vice versa with putting the working CPU into my non-working computer.

I'm very aware this is a stupid question, but as I've (temporarily, hopefully...) ****ed up two computers in two days I'm now extremely leery of using any working parts if there's even the slightest chance of ruining them too.

I'm not an expert, but with the exception of psu possibly I would say no.

It really depends on the component and what is wrong with said component.

There are definitely occasions where using a bad mobo can fry things that you plug into it. I've also heard of bad cards that will fry boards you plug them into.

In most cases, no. I wouldn't worry about testing your CPU in another rig. We do that stuff all of the time here when we need to diagnose.

Just like plex said, it's possible, unlikely, but possible, but how else are you going to diagnose it? Gotta do it.

I've got a Celeron 430 and Celeron E3300 which work great for testing LGA-775 mobos. Got both of them as part of Fry's $40~50 MB/CPU deals so I'm not really all that concerned if they bite the dust. Also have a $30 AMD Sempron 140 for testing AM3.

Given you already seemed to have ruined two computers, though, I'd say just RMA the part in question.
