I can't think of a title for this.

So my uncle gave me this P5K Premium with a Q9550. It's been running fine and overclocks well, 3.4Ghz on stock volts (temps wont let me go higher).

I noticed the other day that HD Tune was showing me lots of communication errors on my 500GB disk, which was in port 1. I thought "Oh well, just a broken cable. I'll look at it later." Today I bluescreened while hosting a minecraft server for one of my friends. I went away to check on the puppies and help my mom and sister bring the groceries in, and when I came back I had a bluescreen with code 0x7a.

I thought nothing of it and restarted, and when it came to boot I was presented with a disk read error. My next thought was that my hard drive had crashed or something, so I restarted and went into the BIOS to check the drives. Both drives showed up fine, so I then thought maybe my MBR had got corrupted somehow.

I then tried to boot into XP on my 250GB drive, which got halfway and bluescreened with 0x7b. Now my only though was that it was the hard drive controller. I decided, "screw this, let's take the puppies for a walk and sort it out later." So, off the puppies went for a walk, and when I came back it booted up perfectly first time. Then I thought that the south bridge had simply overheated somehow, and had cooled down and is now working. I googled the bluescreens and I found that the 0x7b was because my old SB was a ICH8R, while on this board they have the ICH9R, and XP is picky about HDD controller drivers. The 0x7a was occurring because something failed to load into the memory. No biggie, really.

Went back to HD Tune and found that my 500GB drive had 1040 communication errors now, so I decided that I would check my cable now. Upon looking at the cable itself, I found that the port connected to my 500GB drive was a little skew compared to the others, so I thought "Well there's your problem!" and tried to unplug the sata cable. The cable didnt budge, so I pulled harder. Still, it would not budge. I tried with my other hand to get a better grip on the cable, pulled gently, and off came the sata cable, sata port included.

My initial reaction was @_@ CRAP WHAT HAVE I DONE! This still isn't technically my board. My uncle just said I could use it till he finds a buyer for it, so it's still his. Then I tried to put the port back in because it was only the plastic bit, the pins were left on the mobo. Failing that (and bending the pins) I finally decided oh well, there are 5 other ports on this thing, it's not the end of the world, and left it.

TL;DR Bluescreened, checked hard drive cable, sata port was skew pulled sata cable out, sata port came with it.

You'd think manufacturers would put a bit of strength into something so important to a system... D:

EDIT: Anything else I should look out for on this board?

The kind that's not attached well?

It could have happened to any MB.

Just be thankful you have more than one.
