Upgrading can be soooo difficult when deals are thrown at you. I'm really hoping to receive some good opinions to think about...Here's the scenario. About to upgrade from LGA775 and was focusing at SB but a friend of mine wants to sell his new-like MSI P55 GD65 (was a back-up mobo; was tested & used for about a month before storing away) & i5 760 (5 months old & never been OC'ed) for $180. Personally, I think that's a helluva deal
I've found some ddr3 memory for $100 so all together...$280 will be the final cost for the P55/1156 upgrade versus $500 for the Sandy Bridge upgrade. I'm very aware that SB is handing out all types of "can of wup ass" but Ivy Bridge and BullDozer is still coming. I currently have (2) 9800GTX+ 1GB gpu's that I'll be using for at least another 6 months before I considering upgrading gpu's. I'm thinkin' that a P55/1156 rig will last me for a couple of years which will result in lower prices if I decide to upgrade to Ivory Bridge or BullDozer...you know where I'm gettin' at with this.
What would you do in this situation?

I'm using a Q9400 with a piss-pour-performing XFX 750i mobo. I had it OC'ed to about 3.4GHz for about 9 months (highest it would go because of mobo's limitation) and now will not remain stable to save your life...not even @ 3.2GHz. Currently, I've been running @ stock speed for about 4 months and counting.

Sell your current mobo and CPU and get the setup from your friend.

Wait for the future to really go all out on an upgrade.

Id take the deal and OC the I5 to 4GHz. Good upgrade from your current rig at a good price.

Then look at it again in a year or twos time.
First, it's Ivy Bridge, not Ivory Bridge.

My main concern would be, the jump from Yorkfield to Lynnfield isn't as significant as the jump from Yorkfield to SB. Then again, $280 is like upgrading to a Q9550 and the i5-750 will perform better than that. One caveat, how well does the MSI overclock? If it can do 3.8~4GHz, I'd say go for it.
