OC'd CF 6970s > SC SLI GTX 580?

Thread Starter
After looking at how similar the 6970 is in power to the GTX 580, i wanted to update this thread from my last post. After looking at numerous benchmarks on a couple games, a pair of crossfire 6970s gets just at most, 3-7 fps less than a pair of SLI GTX 580s. In Metro 2033 at 1920x1200 DX11 AA/16xAF the 2 6970s got 66 fps while the 2 580s got 72, but here's my question, how much could i OC the 6970 with its stock cc at 880mhz? And, will 2 OC'd 6970s outperform 2 SC GTX 580s? And, though i may have fanboyed a bit and favored Nvidia a little more in my last post, ive recollected myself and stepped back and looked at the numbers......is the extra 5 fps ill be getting with the SLI 580s worth the extra $300, and is 5 fps noticeable? And will 2 overclocked 6970s match or even surpass 2 GTX 580s?

Price difference is even bigger if you consider all 6950s are actually 6970s. And yes you can further overclock unlocked 6950s and surpass 2x580 SLI.

so what would you preferably do?

A) Overclock 2 6970s
B) Get 2 GTX 580s
C) Overclock 2 GTX 570s

Money is a little bit of a concern but at the same time not a huge concern, lol.

I haven't used an ATI card since the 9500 Pro but the choice is still obvious to all but the most blind - 2 x 6970s, or 6950s for better value.

The Nvidia offerings just aren't competitive at their pricepoints and they do worse as the resolution gets bigger.

so get 2 6970s (Overclock)? 2 GTX 570s (Overclock)? or go BIG and get 2 GTX 580s (and still overclock)?

You should look at this link also. Interesting to see that for really high resolutions, the 580 Tri-Sli is lagging behind 6970 X3. So 580 Tri-Sli is a better choice for high-end gaming? Not so sure... And the drivers for the 6970 are really early drivers...

You could get two 6950s and unlock them, then clock them way past stock 6970 clocks and profit cuz you got them for a wee bit over the price of 1 580.

Not another 6950/6970 versus 580 thread again...

Things to consider:

1. A GTX 580 will beat a 6970 in almost every benchmark if the resolution is under 2560x1650. Resolutions higher than that, (for Eyefinity) and you will see the 6970 soundly beat the GTX 580.

2. A 6970 barely has any overclock headroom. A GTX 580 and GTX 570 has lots of OC potential.

3. A 6950 unlocked can perform on par with a 6970, but realize that we do not know the long term effects of the SP unlock. The weaker memory chips on the 6950 may cause stability issues in the future. Again, time will tell.

4. The difference between a 6950 to a 6970 is fairly minuscule, especially once you overclock a 6950 to 6970 clock speeds. I would heavily encourage you to get two 6950s or two 570s. A 580 SLI just seems overkill for your setup.

5. If you want to put them under water, the best choice is Nvidia.

6. ATI drivers... Sike not going there (although imho, I dont see whats so bad about them).

i just dont understand, the 570 is only a teeny tiny bit slower than the 580, yet the 580 is almost $150 more? Huh? Nvidia is horrible at pricing!lol.....For some reason everytime somone brings up anything ATI/AMD related, every nvidia user always mentions something bad about there drivers Are they really that bad? Im stuck with 2 5870s right now so i dont know how much there drivers have improved with the 6xxx series. So, since the 6970s dont have much OCing room, do you think it'd be best to get 2 570s, and overclock them to surpass 2 580s?
