Are there only going to be 4 classes on release?

One thing I don't really like is that everyone can revive anyone who goes down..homogenizing a role just for action's sake.
What I do like is way better opportunities for exploring+cool races and attention to detail (or at least it appears there's a lot of that).

No, there will be eight classes at release, only four have been revealed so far with more to come soon.

It's funny you say it's a fact that's it's going to be the "best mmo ever released" when it's not even out, and the only information out about it is PR information.

Don't always buy every single bit of information given to you from developers.

Every mmo that has been released since the dawn of mmos has always supposed to be the "best mmo ever."

If you've followed the development at all, or watched any of the two demo videos I posted above, it will give you a good idea of where this game is headed. There are tons more gameplay demo videos out there at the moment too.

Arenanet is a very different company than other MMO developers at the moment (in fact the founders broke away from Blizzard to form Arenanet with a different philosophy of game design. They have the awesome mentality of "it'll be ready when it's ready". Which is why they haven't even entertained ideas of a release date until its polished and perfected. They refuse to release a shoddy game.

Likewise, Arenanet's publishers NCsoft has been very supportive of Arenanet during their so far 3 years of development of the game. They've given them seemingly unlimited time, and unlimited budget to do what they want, because they know Anet will produce an amazing product.

I didn't mention the best part, once you buy the game, it will be free to play online, no subscription fees!

Seriously Backfat, you are a total fanboy. Very few games released have met the standards set by their developer content previews and those games are rated 95 over on Metacritic. Granted GW2 will be a good game, but it won't be the best. There are far too many variables that come into play. Its like you're expecting the millions of WoW players just to roll over to GW2 on release. Here's the first problem, and its the same problem AOC ran into, hardware requirements.

+1 for LotRO, it's not a PVP game though there is a PVP aspect to it. I personally find the PVP in the game pretty boring though as it's restricted to one small region of the game and you need to level your character to max level to experience it properly (or make a pre-leveled monster character and go at it).

It sounds like you define best as the most populated.

Did that make MW2 a better game than CoD4? or even BC2? I'm not expecting millions of WoW players to transfer over. Some will. This game is for people sick of the grinding game that nearly every MMO has become.

I'm not as much of a fanboy as I am an eager follower. I had never even heard of GW2 or even GW1 for that matter until I was skimming Gamespot in August and saw the manifesto video and was taken with it ever since.

And yeah, every MMO that has been released was deemed to be the WoW killer or the best yet.. But I honestly never thought that when I looked at any of those games when they were in development and after release (Warhammer/Aion/Final Fantasy/LOTRO/etc) They all looked like junk to me, the same old grind game, hurrily rushed along in development with little or no thought into gameplay.

If you don't take at least 30 minutes to look into the development of GW2 then you really can't form the opinion to the contrary. It's easy to scoff it off as just another MMO because that's what they've all been up to now.

Another +1 for LOTRO. I haven't played since they went F2P, but when I did, it was a fun game (and something I would have played over WoW if my friends would have joined me). Really though, for me, anything I play is just to tide me over until TOR.

I never stated nor implied that population in the game made it the best; no MMO has even touched the highest rated games out there in terms of score, but those games earned their scores by fulfilling 99% of what they promised. I've looked at the developer content from GW2 and I honestly don't feel its going to be any better than the failed promises that infest the market every day. Like how FF14 was supposed to be a godsend in terms of creating a new generation of MMO, it turned out to be the worst game a very large amount of people have ever played. If my core group of friends gets GW2, you can bet I'll be on it. But its not going to revolutionize leveling up and playability in an MMO anymore than COD revolutionizes modern warfare.

Ah! That's a relief then. I admit I haven't really followed this game at all, and was a little confused when I only saw 4 available classes on the main page. I will be following this game more closely..:V

That's fair.

However FFXIV is a bad example. Anybody with half a brain could see that during development that the game would be a PoS (SquareEnix fanboys excluded). I remember watching a few live streams of it during the beta and was just thinking to myself.. "How did this even get to beta?".

What will end up being over four years of solid development since it was announced until it is released - I think you can say that is almost unprecedented in the MMO field as it stands.

Hey everyone. I'm looking for a new MMO to play. I want something fantasy, with a lot of customization and control over what you can do.

Ideally, I should be able to play one of many classes, and control my own abilities. Games I've played/am playing that I enjoy a lot are:

Eve Online
World of Warcraft
World of Tanks
Atlantica Online
Lost Saga

Games I've played that I wasn't fond of:

Black Prophecy Beta
Luna Online
Perpetuum Online
Vindictus
Allods Online
Any smattering of Korean imports

I'm trying to be descriptive here, it's just difficult. I want something that is unique, that makes you work for what you get, and that lets you create your own sort of character. The games I listed above that I like a lot give you plenty of customization options, and are very PVP-heavy. I haven't tried Darkfall. I hear it's good PVP, but I also hear it's dying.

Anyway, if anyone has any great suggestions I am open to hearing them!
Aion is fun if you like PvP.

I play on private servers though which to me makes the game a lot better because Retail is really really slow.
