soldering RAMs onto Fermi 465

Thread Starter 
I have an MSI non GE 465. It has empty spots there where the GE has RAM.

Exactly why do I always read that it is IMPOSSIBLE to solder more RAM onto a vid card ?
What if they are the same brand/model RAM that's already on the card ?

Is the "IMPOSSIBLE" part finding he same same RAM thats already on the card ?

Someone bless me with your wisdom !

It's not impossible, it just extremely impractical.

The hardest part is not obtaining the memory ICs (though getting those in good condition isn't very easy, except in bulk), it's attaching them to the board. A great deal of precision, both in placement of the BGA ICs, and the heating/reflowing of the solder balls is needed. This is only very rarely done by hand, and even when it is, it requires tools that are quite a bit more expensive than a consumer GPU.

This.

For the amount of trouble and time it would take you would would be better off just buying a GTX 580 instead of modding a mid range card like the 465. In the end all you would have is a 465 with a little more RAM. It is more likely that you would have a broken GTX 465 paperweight for your desk.

If you have a 030 revision core it's almost certainly not worth the risk/trouble because nobody knows whether the disabled ROP's and Memory Controller can be re-activated on the 030 cards. Plus you for sure aren't going to get the additional shaders unlocked via bios flash, so ...

If you had a 275 core but are just missing the IC's (a VERY small % of 465's) there's at least a decent chance that if you slapped on the two missing IC's you could get all 1280MB of RAM working.

Alright, I see now. I thought this girl I know that does Xbox 360 GPU re-balling/soldering could do it. Probably couldn't because of the size difference. I think the 360 GPUs are like 65nm and would use larger "balls"
