How do you test graphic cards if they are running properly or not?

Hi I just upgraded from onboard graphics to MSI 460 hawk and I just installed it yesterday on a fresh windows 7 x64. I installed the driver right away after the windows installation is completed, even before windows update has kicked in to install the onboard graphics. So after the restart, windows tried to install the onboard graphics and the onboard graphics took over the 460. Even afterburner shows the onboard graphics instead of 460. I have to disable and uninstall the onboard graphics driver, restart, reinstall the 460 driver again to actually see the screen in high resolution.

After all that back and forth switching would that affect my card's performance? How do I test if my card is running properly or not?

Oh and there's one occasion when I was waiting for windows backup I tried to reposition my computer, screwing everything back to position but accidentally disconnected the power supply cord. The harddrive is dead now because it was working during the disconnection. But I was wondering if this affects my graphics card?

Thanks

Download furmark and run its stability test. If you get no errors running it, your cards are stable.

I did a stability test and I stopped after 3 mins. Doesn't seem to have any problems.
But then I did a benchmark on 1280x1024 fullscreen for 60s (60000ms) and I only got 4816 points. Is this normal? On the furmark website the comparative table lists 4850 512mb to have 4383 points. I thought the GTX460 is around the same as a 6850 how is it possible that the gtx460 only hits slightly higher points than a 4850?

btw i'm using an amd phenom 9550 cpu with 5gb ram.

Download 3dmark06. You will only be able to run it one time unless you pay for it. Post your score here and we will let you know if your graphics card is optimized.

Thanks a lot. Here is the link to the results:

That score is a bit low for your card. Try this - click. Be very careful and make sure you do not skip a step. If you have any questions about the process, post back here and I will help you.

That will ensure you have the right driver and that there are no driver conflicts.

Good luck, once you ensure you have the right driver and it's installed with no conflicts your score should go up.

Wow very helpful guide. + Rep for you. I have updated the driver to 260.99 by following the guide and the score did went up a bit by 300:
http://3dmark.com/3dm06/15260924

But is it still a bit too low? The thing I'm worry about is defectives in this card since I just bought this card and I can return it if it's defective. Is the card running properly or not? I haven't touched anything, no oc, everything is stock.

Thanks

Search around google and see if you can find that exact card with your cpu and the score they got in 3dmark06. I have seen one before, but can't for the life of me find it now, a nice chart of people's scores on 3dmark06 broke down by card and cpu.

might be a silly question... but have you changed initial display in bios to PEG?
It shouldn't even detect the onboard in Windows if you're running dedicated gpu
