Need help with some partitions

Thread Starter
I'm not all that in the know when it comes to hard drives and partitions

My 'Stuff' partition (which is now an entire drive since getting my SSD) is becoming rather cramped. I don't have all that much free space left on that partition (roughly 13GB as you can see from the picture below).
Now, there's a great deal of free space left on the drive as a whole. When I right click the partition and select "Extend volume", I go through the menus and then I get this popup:
The operations you selected will convert the selected basic disk(s) to dynamic disk(s). If you convert the disk(s) to dynamic, you will not be able to start installing operating systems from any volume on the disk(s) (except the current boot volume). Are you sure you want to continue?
Yes/No

I have no idea what that at all means
Anyone care to explain what this means for me in layman terms?

I'm also a total noob when it comes to partitions and general HD stuff. I just want space and speed.

Allow me to learn from this thread as well

You can ONLY extend (make an partition bigger) for a partition to be on the left, and for one on the right to be included in the one on the left.
Right to left for extend. Left to right for shrink.

So you can't expand "Stuff."

You have to back it up, delete the partition (unallocated). Then extend "Free Space" to include "stuff" so you have one big partition. And while you do that, extend all 3 partitions in one. then shrink what you need.

*sigh*

That is unfortunate.
Time to go grab the 2TB external drive.

Thanks Kora.

Basically, the way i always understood it is because the partition is not at the front of the drive it will not be able to boot from there.

Think I might also mean a partition that is a shell, seen by the OS but not by the BIOS. Not very sure of the definitions though: that is always what I have believed

What you can do is to copy some of the stuff off and make a partition on the blank space, extend from there, and as you copy more stuff (as much as you can) defrag and then copy more stuff over since you cannot extend from right to left.

My question is, why do you have unallocated space? What were you trying to do?
Your best bet would probably just to backup everything and format the whole drive.

see my setup, much easier to deal with, every drive has a single partition.

My OS used to be on that spot.

You don't have to delete and reformat to extend it.

Download gparted, burn to a disk, and boot from it. It's much better than the Windows tool, and is very simple to use, and much more powerful and quicker too.
