I'm surprised not many know why this is. Allow me to shed some light.

With more than one monitor, the 480, which would normally be at lower, 2D clocks when in normal use, goes up to full 3D clocks, as if you are in a game/stressing it, at idle, to compensate for the extra monitor(s). Therefore, they run hotter.

I can't comment on if there is a fix, having not owned them myself, but I hope I helped shed some light on the issue.

The 2 monitors are different? That's your problem right there. Get 2 with the same resolution and your GPU temps will drop, a LOT. I run dual displays on my GTX460, and it's cool as anything, but they're the same resolution.
