The two lenses in question
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/670041-STUD/Sigma_668306_17_70mm_F2_8_4_DC_Macro.html/mode/edu
vs.

The extra length on the Nikon isn't really necessary but nice.

Which would you go for?

Having handled both lenses, I'd say they are about equal. The 16-85 is very sharp, perhaps sharper than the Sigma, but that is not all that important, really. The 16-85 can give some nasty bokeh around 50mm (IIRC).

The build quality of the sigma is also pretty good. Not sure if it can beat the Nikon, but it did feel "confident".

Thanks citruspers smile.gif

What worries me is Sigma's supposed issues with quality control..confused.gif

Half of my lens lineup is Sigma, and even though there might be slight variations between my lenses, I never notice it in real-life situations. Nikons can suffer from front/backfocus just as well.

If you are still afraid of QC problems, just ask if you can test a couple of them in-store.

I'm probably going to have to order this lens through a Sigma dealer in the Montreal area. Maybe I can rent it somewhere...

Renting won't get you anywhere, as the QC varies for every lens. Still, I don't think it's such a big deal.
