will SSD price go down?

Hello, I placed a order yesterday on 2 new 24 inch 2ms monitors (has not been sent yet), then when I woke up just now I wondered if I should talk to the shop and ask them to just send 1 instead of 2, since I honestly don't need a 3rd, was just for awesomeness (I guess).

I wanted to know if it's worth only getting 1 monitor and rather get a SSD as a replacement of the 2nd monitor (Thought about the Corsair SSD force 60gb one, about $175, screens were $280 each), or should I rather just wait a few months and buy a SSD at that point? If the price difference is worth it.

I will get a new case and mobo within the next months anyway, but I just wanted to know if I should just get a SSD while I'm ordering something already.

I think I remember some people saying prices would drop to $1/GB by 2011, and we're nowhere near that.

The tech is either progressing slower than they anticipated, or they're delaying it to give milking longevity.

I wouldn't expect any major price plummet anytime soon either way. It will be very gradual like it has been from the start.

I don't think the price of SSDs will go down in the next few months. The spot rate on NAND have been increase recently. Watch the Flash Spot Rate over a few days: www.dramexchange.com

However, there are 3-4 major new controllers expected the first half of this year.

Then again, IMFT will finally be producing enough quality 25nm NAND and will help to bring down prices. Toshiba also has their toggle and TLC NAND.

Basically, price probably won't drop too much but you will be able to get more performance per dollar.
Once again...

Just saw the second post - And thanks, cleared some things up.

I just don't want an SSD to look cool and all, I do want it to speed things up, but I've no problem with a 7200rmp as of yet. If there will be better (higher performance) discs coming up, I will definitely wait.

Damn, that sucks to hear. I've kind of been on the fence about getting a C300 or Microcenter SSD but was waiting to hear news on the next gen of SSDs that were supposedly coming out Q1 of 2011.

Just haven't been able to find anything recent on it (most of the stuff mentioning it is from summer of 2010).

Prices should still go down. There's no way they'll price a faster unit at the same price as an older model. I don't expect much of a drop, though. Half of the "drop" will be probably be covered by an increase in price of the new models, with the other half being a drop in price on the old ones.

Unless you expect technology to stop advancing there will always be something better coming up.

Just keep waiting.....it's much cheaper!

yes they will, i hear the NAND companies are supposed to increase production sometime in 2011 but that doesnt mean there will be a significant price drop on the product(s)
i bought a CF card and an adapter and those 2 together ran me close to 100 bux and the CF card was only 32gb, this was 1 year ago and the CF card was made by kingston go figure, im in the same boat as the rest of you on waiting to buy SSDs i want to replace all of my drives way before they crap out

Cheers

prices are going to level off for a while until next gen drives come out. then you will be able to get some of these SF-1200 drives on clearance before the only option is to buy the new SF-2000 with a hefty price tag.

DRAM index is rising so I say buy all the DDR3 and SSD that you will need in the next 8-12 months now before you end up paying more in the near future.
