pendrivelinux.com <--- get a usb stick or three. Put OSs on them. Boot them, run them, play. You can run them from the stick only and there's no permanent install unless you choose to install one to your hard drive.
My normal approach is to take existing windoze computer, boot up a USB stick, and use the linux program gparted (usually in the menu) to shrink the windows ntfs partition down. Then add a 4G swap partition and multiple 50 GB partitions. Use the 50s to try out different linuxes. When you find one you like, wipe all the 50s (but one) and then put your linux there. I always leave a 50GB partition open for the next new shiny linux I want to try...
Honestly, it's "Just do it". If you like it, you'll wish you hadn't waited so long.
