I switch my RAM speed from 1600 to 2133 and I saw a 4% speed increase on the old bigadv WUs. Unforunately there is no difference on the new smaller advmethods WUs. So 1600 RAM is more than enough. I've ran several tests and my TPF doesn't change with either setting. Robbo2 explained the extra RAM speed helped with the huge WUs, but doesn't matter so much for little ones.

True, but 1333 could just be too low and bottlenecking even these units.

How much RAM did you assign the VM, lab?

4GB for my VMware 3.0. You might be right about 1333, I have not tested that. I guess someone could downclock their ram and try it.

I could buy more ram, when I built this pc I bought budget ram. Here are the specs to my board, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130573 but it looks like I can only go as high as a stock clock of 1333, but will support 1600 and 2133 overclocked, I'm sure our current ram doesn't overclock very well http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820139075 so I would gladly pick up something that does if you have any suggestions

Had a little scare this morning, woke up to the power being out, looks like for only a few hours and we are still holding the lead

I put what the tutorial said, 1 gb, but I can allocate more if that helps, between the os and folding I only use 2.4 gigs out of 8. How much should I set it too?

If 1600 is the sweet spot for these WU's, then maybe backing off my ram with allow me to achieve a higher OC on my 2500k?

It's not your amount of total RAM that's the potential issue, it's most likely the speed (and maybe also the allocated amount).

That RAM you linked probably doesn't OC very well, I'd say so too. This RAM is a favorite amongst overclockers, for a few reasons. It's cheap (8gig for 45 bucks), although the rated speed along with the timings doesn't look too hot (1600MHz and 11-11-11-28), they are very good overclockers, seen reports of 2400MHz on stock timings, and many 2133MHz at CL10. Your IMC probably can't handle 2400MHz, but 2133 or 1866 should be plenty fast or even if you stick to 1600MHz timings of 7-8-8-24 is about the best I've seen reports of. As a bonus they are real low profile RAM (not the bogus ow profile Corsair and such claim, when it is in fact standard height) and low voltage (1.25 at stock and 1.4-1.5 OC'd).

I have a few sets of these myself, but I haven't been able to test them out on a Sandy yet. One set that I've got does 1600MHz and 8-8-8-24-1T@1.4V on my X6 1090T.

When I ran Windows and a Linux VM I had 8GB ram and allocated 4GB to the VM, 3 would probably have been enough. Last week I tested a Linux-VM in native Linux, and found that 1GB performed sightly worse than 3B or 4GB.

I have the same Samsung RAM as Arvidab and I can confirm it runs at 2133 at cl10 without issues @ 1.6v. It is on sale now for $40 which is as cheap as it gets. biggrin.gif

RAM OC really doesn't affect your CPU OC unless you are up'ing the voltage on the IMC which could make more heat, but it isn't likely. RAM OCing could cause crashes which would make finding your max CPU OC harder though.

Your motherboard should handle any RAM just fine.

Does yours scale when going over 1.5V? I've read that for most people it doesn't.

JMattes also has this RAM, I think he runs it at 2133 CL10@1.5V.

So I should be able to run 1600 stock clock ram with my motherboard? I'll get that ram ordered and hopefully have it by Wednesday.

I'm trying to allocate more ram to vmplayer, but it won't let me, I click the memory in settings, but the adjustments are grayed out, how can I change it?
