Project Air Head

post #1 of 40
Thread Starter
Well i decided now that i have my internal parts the way i want them, and after looking at a lot of case mods and cases being built, that why not i could give it a try. i work in a fabrication shop as a fabricator/painter. so this might help.

I like air cooling, but can never have enough air going through my case. This build should not only be fun, but make my need's happy.

The case is going to be made out of perforated {3/8" holes} .080 aluminum, and ether 1" or 3/4" aluminum angle for the main frame to make the case strong. the motherboard tray will be 12"x10"x3/16" red translucent acrylic sheet.

all metal is going to be painted light red, with several coats of clear with house of kolor red kandy intensifier to give it a deep glassy red. inside i am going to have blue led's along with the blue fan on my zalman 9700. should give it a blackish purple look in the dark {i am hopeful}

hear is the back side cover and the motherboard try.

This one is of the front and rear plates, i have to mark them and cut out the holes for the i/o plate and the dvd drives and stuff.

And of the clear coat additive.

Hope you enjoy this project and idea so far. I will be working on it on my lunch breaks and spare time. comment's, suggestion's, and question's are welcome.

HOK makes killer stuff. I just picked up a small hvlp and compressor and will definitely be using HOK paint for my rig. Hope to see this soon.....

well i am not big on there paints but i love the kolor additives. painting is fun and something i love to do. hope to see you painting soon as well. and if your going to be spraying with a HVLP i recommend a 3m respirator. they are like 20.00 and keep all the over spray and fumes out of your lungs.

lol thanks for the advice as I had been an idiot/lazy in the past. Maybe 2 years ago I had some Pioneer ODR amps that I prepped and sprayed for the 1st time. No respirator....not smart. It wasnt the base coat rather the clear coat that messed me up. I spayed in the am and had to work at 7pm. By that time I felt like my lungs were closing up and my contacts were drying out. By the time I got to work I was pounding albuterol treatments and by 12 midnight I was in the ER........Im a nurse practitioner fulltime and part time moron... lesson learned. My spray gear is up in NY so Im down in FLorida right now and will piece together a small paint setup......................and a respirator lol..... good luck w/ur build!

hopeful to get to do more work on it soon. trying to decide how i want to mount everything. and i got to measure my psu cables to see if i am going to have to extend them or not. also thinking about using some 1" tubing to run most of my cables in, but i have not decided yet on everything.

ok got some done today. took a nice lunch, i still have some planning to do but this is slowly coming together. i would like things to be a bit faster but i was stuck at home from ice for a week.. lol.. i made corners out of .040 for the outside of the case, i have to cover the corners because they have sharp edges, and cut easy, and it helps add a bit of stability.

after welding it all together i brushed all the welds to clean them up. i still have to make mounts for the motherboard tray, cut out the front and rear panels, and make my drive trays, psu riser, and led tray. still working on how to hide the wires but i think i have it figured out. hope to have more soon.
