Sonata's "Fan Only" connectors - 5V?

Thread Starter
I have an original Sonata whose True 380S supply died this week. I've replaced it with EarthWatts 380, but it has no Fan Only connectors -- you need to use the 12V Molex.

Does anyone know if the Fan Only connectors were 5V? With searching, I've been finding 5V and 7V, so I'm not sure which it is. (Update: I've since confirmed that they are indeed 5V.)

Whatever it was, it was perfect for the stock Antec 120mm rear fan as well as the Pabst 4412 FGL I have installed in front (though in summer I put the front one back on 12V).

I saw this thread showing some ways to do that:
http://www.overclock.net/air-cooling...onverters.html

I sure would like to find something like the Nexus mentioned there but for Molex.

Switching wires on the Molex worries me, since I've seen many comments advising against it. And I'd rather not have to solder in a resistor. Plus, I'd like to be able to get back easily to 12V when need be, at least for the front fan.

Found this molex to molex connector - Noise/Speed Reducer, Directron 12V to 7V Power Adapter / Cable for Case Fans.

Quote:
Specs: 12V is supplied on the Yellow wires. 5V is supplied through Red wires. The black wires are ground. Two pass-thru connectors included at each end. One end is male to be connected to the power supply. The other end is female to be connected to the case fan. The actual length of the cables between the connectors may vary. Do not depend on the length for extension purposes.
Or you can get a fan controller.

Thanks, that looks interesting. Wouldn't it have the same electrical drawback though as the rewiring mod to 7V? These adapters would make it easy to switch back and forth though.

The power adapter does exactly the same thing as the mod, so not really a drawback.
You can remove it easily whereas the mod is permanent (more or less).

Right, it's definitely more convenient. I'm just trying to sift through the data on whether a 7V mod can blow up your P.S. The best I can figure among divided opinion is that it won't unless you somehow don't have the motherboard hooked up, or anything else using 5V. Otherwise, safe?

Another way is to use the above part from SVC (http://www.svc.com/fsa-75.html, which does 12, 7, and 5) in addition to something that converts the 3-pin to Molex:

Zalman Molex to 5v and 12v fan connectors, $4 with free shipping. No soldering. I've got two. They work fine.

That's similar to this one:

Great if you have 3-pin fans. Otherwise, you also need:
