how do the ads know what i wanna buy?

Thread Starter
do i have spyware? i go to an online store like newegg and look up some items, then when i go to other websites, i see newegg ads with the items that i looked up previously. same thing with amazon or other websites.

i have avast running on my computer, and i scanned my computer with malwarebites, and spy-bot, and they say i dont have any spyware. what is going on? how do the ads know what i was looking to buy?

Tracking cookies. They're harmless really.

What happens is when you visit a site, cookies are added/modified on your local computer that reflects your browsing history. These ads then access these cookies and choose an ad that reflects your browsing habits. That's why for me I have a ton of photography ads.
