[TheGameHeadz] PS3 Plans For Backwards Compatibility- Revealed - Page 4

Wow...that was one of the most poorly written 'news' articles I've ever read.

So instead of just letting us play games we already own, we have to buy them again. Alright then Sony.

Remove B/C, 2 USB's, Card readers and the chrome finish then the price decresed massively from around £799 to £399.. It must have been more than software so I doubt it's going to happen. Unless they bring it with a new model type of PlayStation 3 like the Xbox 360's (Jasper etc.. and the other chipsets).

Also all these HD re-mastered versions of old classics as mentioned earlier make me think they won't bother with the idea and willl just release re-mastered editions of the most known franchises on the PlayStation 2. To be honest I think a Metal Gear Solid Re-Mastered Edition should have been developed after the God of War Collection.

Sorry for rambling on.. I tend to do that.
Ok, heres the deal. The origional PS3's that were fully BC had the PS2 CPU and GPU in them. The software BC models didnt have the emotion engine (CPU) but they did have the GPU. After the 80GB Run Sony removed the GPU also, basically before that the software emulation only emulated the CPU, It would take quite a bit of code to emulate both, but im sure it could be done.

On another note going this route kind of eliminates the point of backwards compatability. Why would I want to re buy all my PS2 games. Yes some titles, I would for the improved graphics, but games that were only OK (a lot of PS2 titles) I wouldnt want to pay again for. the reason for removing backwards compatability were strictly monetary, I'll bet on that. Oh, well I got my BC PS3 already.

PSX titles can be remastered too. People have done it to Final Fantasy 7 by hand.

Remake =/= remaster.
Remaster is just making textures better looking for higher resolution output, increasing performance, general tweaks to most of the visual quality/effects (ie in Shadow of Collossus much of the smoke in the background to help performance on the PS2 is no longer needed)

That aside:
I think Square has something much larger up their sleeve. I have no doubt they'll eventually do a FF7 or even 8 remake possibly for both the PS3 and 360 if not the PS4 and the 3rd Xbox.

How does that make any sense? How is this keeping the loyal Playstation fans happy? I have a bunch of PS2 games and a broken Ps2. I was considering purchasing a PS3 with the expectation to play my old PS2 games if i wanted. If they are not going to give use hardware/software abilities to play PS2 games then they should at least let us trade our old PS2 games for the digitally remastered ones. Maybe with a PS3 proof of purchase.
As the "article" states - for them to update every single nonBC PS3 with hardware required to do it would be very hard to. Unless they created some kind of external hardware pack and sold it at a profitable price, then it wouldn't be worth it.

Note that the PS3s with "software" BC isn't just all software. It's partial. They still have the PS2 hardware in them for the BC just minus the EE chip.

Judging by the way the GoW Collection turned out, I for one hope that this idea continues. The quality of the remasters that Santa Monica did for the 2 GoW games were FANTASTIC.
Prince of Persia they say is OK. It's nothing too great and doesnt compare too well with GoW.
I've read the worst one to date is the Medal of Honor bundled in the special edition of the Next-Gen Medal of Honor.
If they avoid the MoH quality, and do it more along the lines of GoW and PoP - I'd be willing to shell out $10 bucks for classics again. I much prefer doing this rather than Square Enix taking Final Fantasy 1, 2, 3, ect and making everything into chibi sprites and shelling out $30 for the game.

This is exactly how I read the article. This isn't backwards compat but another way to milk the consumer to further line their pockets. Yea, I wanna pay for the same game twice, Ummm, No thank you
