overclocking 5870 Eyefinity 6 ???

Can't seem to find too much info out there, but curious how much success people have had with these cards and OCing... can they be treated just like a normal 5870?

I need more horsepower from this card and am willing to do whatever it takes so long as it stays on air ie; aftermarket coolers, loud as hell etc...

My specific application does NOT yield a gain going to crossfire nor buying a dual GPU card.

Is getting an additional 10%-20% out of the question?

thanks

Need more info on what temps you are getting with stock speeds at idle and load.

Have you messed with the overdrive settings in catalyst? That should give you a good 10% boost...but the cost is the fans ramping up if you can't keep the gpus cool - it can get really noisy.

Im not at all concerned with noise; the machine already has 3x delta 120mm 250CFM fans, along with 8 rather loud 80mm fans. I would be more than happy to put in say a spitfire with another delta 250cfm if its going to yield good results.
Cost isn't much of a factor as company money is paying for everything.

When I am working beside this machine I am using earplugs; once its in its final home it will be in an air conditioned humidity controlled server room.

Currently it has the stock cooler (XFX 5870 eyefinity 6) and if memory serves its in the 55c range at load; not sure about idle.
What have people pushed these things to on air? Is there a better tool than CCC? I know there is an AMD overclocking tool but my understanding is it needs to be relaunched each time, I need something that can be set once and left so when a stupid person comes in to use this machine they can just boot it up and have it work.

I am using it to drive 6DLP projectors but running into FPS issues with our application of choice; (X-plane.) the CPU isn't the bottle neck as no core is getting above say 70%, but the GPU is peaking out in certain situations dropping FPS down into the 20s.
Xplane wont do crossfire and it wont do a multi GPU card so I am stuck with the 5870 (which I understand is the fastest single GPU 6 output card out there...

Ahhh...the infamous X-Plane! That explains your needs.

Your setup is as good as it gets for 6 screens at the moment. The only other thing I could suggest is dropping the resolution down on each of the DLPs.

If the game isn't pushing your GPU to the limit, it may be your CPU that is starving the GPU. Are you tapped out in that department as well?

CPU is an i7 930 OCd to 4.2ghz. I think the CPU is not he bottle neck as no core ever goes above say ~%70 but the GPU is hitting %100 pretty regularly.

If I were to find the correct cooling setup is it possible to get these 5870s into the +1ghz range?

I have a Corsair AX1200 for power

Its ultimately going to be shooting onto a curved wall; but here's a quick and dirty setup as proof of concept: (sorry for the ****ty pics)

I had an EF6 but never really got into OC'ing it. I hear the memory on these will not OC as far as a normal 1gb version but that is a rumor.

Try MSI afterburner. It is free, OC is easy, you can also make custom fan profiles.

http://event.msi.com/vga/afterburner/download.htm

I know this is not what you want to do but you might try turning down the resolution to help FRAPS.

Edit, for example, if you are at 1920 x 1080 per display turn the card down to 1600 x 900 and set the display to fit to screen size. You will see a minimal drop is resolution but up your minimum frame rate. Just a thought.

So general consensus is these things can't really be OC to any practical level?

Lets say you get a 20% oc out of this and increase your minimum fram rate from 20 to 24FPS would you be happy?

I don't see anyway around it right now, if you want a big bump in frames I think you will have to turn down some in game settings or resolution.

I would even try a 3 projector eyefinity in portrait mode just to see. Resolution or FPS?
