e8400 and P5N-d 3.6GHz help!!!

Thread Starter
OK, so I am new to overclocking, like you all haven't heard that before, but I'm having some serious issues. I can get it to boot to desktop, and I can start a test with Intel Burn Test and my computer just locks up. One time I did make it 36 mins into Orthos, and the same thing happened again. I have read for hours until my eyes hurt, and can't figure out whats wrong. So any help is needed.

FSB:1600
MEM: 800
Unlinked

Vcore:1.28750V
DRAM:1.970V
HT Voltage:1.36V
NB Chipset Voltage:1.36V
SB Chipset Voltage:Auto

The more I read on reaching 3.6GHz, the more annoyed I get because everyone says its so easy. Now these specs here I pulled straight off of a guys BIOS settings on youtube, and it doesn't work and is nowhere near stable. Also when I try to set my memory timings to 4-4-4-12, like this setup calls for, I BSOD.

Thanks in advance,
ston3balls

can you show me a screenshot of your temps under load please

I don't have a screenshot, but I know that with Intel Burn Test the highest they have gotten it 68 at 3.6

First thing I would do would be set your BIOS back to default,
I take it with your RAM being at 800 mhz you are running PC6400?
After that, or what I normally do is for the time being, set the ram and things to auto, leave the timings alone for the time being.

Then I would raise the FSB just a bit at a time untill you find a clock that you are happy with. Then I would run prime 95 to stress test while using Core Temp and real temp to keep an eye on my temps.

I have managed to get to 3.87 without any voltage tweaks and runs stable, I am however using PC8500 as opposed to 6400.

Can you try the above and let me know how you get on. Thanks

I am able to get to 3.45GHz easily, while leaving everything on auto, and it runs stable as hell. Its just that last little push that's hanging me up.

Right ok,

Have you tried to raise your mem frequency a little at a time also, remember to do your mem tests and things like that when you are raising it, In order to gain a higher clock on your CPU you may need to up the ram frequency also. I would have thought you would have been able to get past 3.4 though.

I just looked up specs on my RAM, and it is PC2 6400, I don't think its so much the frequency on my RAM as it is the voltage, but hey you all know more than me. And to answer you ?, I did bump the memory up to 840Mhz and still got the lock ups.

ok,

Well if you have tried that, the next thing i would do would be the voltages but like I said I managed to get to 3.8 without need to give anything more volts.

Be careful when you are doing this. Just raise it a tiny tiny bit at a time, its better that it too take a long time to OC your machine and keep it stable than it is just to jump in and blow it up in one way or another.

Anyway, I normally increase the voltage slightly when i do this, boot up, check temps.

If they are ok then I would incrase the FSB a little more, boot up and check temps and stress test etc.

Keep me posted

I had to go back to defaults just to boot up. Couldn't even do a 3.15GHz OC without hanging on boot up. I'm almost at the point where I want to give up on my overclocking career.
