Shrouds and push vs pull

I understand that shrouds are attached to a radiator, and the fans to the shrouds. (If this is incorrect, please throw something at me.)

However, I'm not sure if I should use push or pull. Will be using some San Ace fans in push or pull or both. My initial plan was to use a total of 6 fans, 3 push 3 pull for my 3x140mm rad. With San Ace fans, is 6 overkill?

Do I still get the benefit of a quieter rig if I have fans in pull? I think I need them in push, GTX 420 is a high density rad.

You can turn the fans down in push pull and still have a quiet rig. shrouds also help if you have the room for them. I have tried various configurations and the temp differerence for me is negligable (3-4 degrees), but the ability to keep my rig quiet is my goal. I currently run 3 yate loon 38mm fans on my 360 rad and two on my 240 rad. They are very quiet, but temps increased 3-4 degrees coming from my sunon 38 mm in push/pull. I think the Yates are quieter and can live with the temp difference.

Good information. I should have phrased my main question differently:

Do I get the sound-dampening benefits with 3 San Ace fans in pull (only) with a shroud between them and the radiator? How about just push?

Shrouds I did for my 480. Intake I did 2 shrouds, exhaust just the fan. Went with 8 fans total. I went with quiet fans because I knew id run push and pull with shrouds. Mine just stands on the floor, the shrouds help it not tip over, ment to put feet but never got around to it.







Pushing will give best results. Shrouds will give 1 or 2 degree drop, and get rid of the center hole block. Pulling will drop temps more but add noise like you said. If your gonna run monster fans pushing should be fine.

You should really check out this testing done by Martin:

It shows that below 1500 RPM fans pull provides more performance than push and above 1500 RPM push is better. It also shows the temperature drops that adding shrouds provides. Finally, it shows that the optimal shroud depth is around 25mm, which is perfect because thats how thick a normal fan is (buy some cheap $3 yate loons and gut the middle of the fan part).

2nd that.

I dropped 2 degrees on my RX360 rad by using 3 2000rpm fans in push with shrouds as opposed to 6 of THE SAME fans in push/pull. The best way to know what works best for your setup is to test it :-) The best part is I can drop the fans to 1000rpm (almost silent) and it's only 2c higher...

Thanks all. Push it is. smile.gif Since I'm top mounting the radiator, this means the shroud and fans go inside the case. I was hoping pull would be a little quieter but with the fans bare to the air, the noise levels aren't going to be that low.

Looking for an adapter that can mount 120mm fans on 140mm rads -- that's the easy part -- but one that is also a shroud, and preferably around 25mm or so. Google has helped not at all, and this may be a pretty niche configuration so I'm not sure that it exists. Worst case I get an adapter and a shroud separately, just curious if someone knows if this piece of hardware exists.
