One of my design goals for this project was to have all water cooling components contained internally. With the case I have I may be able to add a small radiator up front, but I don't think I need to do that just yet.

A fan controller is going to be in the mix, but Gentle Typhoons are out. My rad is a BlackIce GTX 420 so I need the extra pressure vs CFMs.
What fans are you going to be using? With that 920 and 5870 if you used 3 1850 RPM Gentle Typhoons with 140mm to 120mm adapters you would get excellent temperatures and low noise, especially when you turn the fans down with a controller.

As an aside, I really appreciate the practical advice. ie, "With that 920 and 5870 if you used..." That's extremely helpful to someone who has done a lot of research but has no actual WC experience to draw upon.

Those are some pretty powerful fans! I don't know what hardware you're using, but with that 420 rad you surely don't need such powerful fans to get good temperatures. ~1800 RPM fans would work fine and be MUCH quieter than those San Aces, especially if you got the GentleTyphoon variant.

Finally, unless you are folding 24/7 do you really need the fans to be at anything more than 5V when you are away from the computer.

The radiator has high fin density, which from what I've learned here and out among the intertubes, requires high static pressure to make the radiator effective. San Ace fans have excellent static pressure regardless of what voltage they're run at, so my hope is that I can run powerful fans at low voltage.

PS: The hardware in my sig is accurate for the system I'm building.

Gentle Typhoons push more air through the radiator at 1800 RPM than the San Ace does, while being quieter. The power of the San Ace fan is it's upper RPM range, as it scales much higher than the AP-15.

Gentle Typhoons have a lot of static pressure, don't worry about it.

I know San Ace fans have more, but I do worry about noise. Then again, I've been told so many times on these forums that a high FPI radiator like the BlackIce GTX line must have high static pressure, and the higher the better.

I can afford either or, I just don't know which to nab.

The Gentle Typhoons. They are simply amazing and will give you great temperatures on a 420 radiator with 120--> 140mm adapters (that was you plan, correct?) With the i7 and 5870 in that loop the difference between the San aces @ full RPM and the GT's at full RPM is about 2C. Considering how much louder the San aces are at 2,700 RPM than the Gentle Typhoons are at 1850 RPM the typhoons are a much better buy.

Normally the fan choice would make more of a difference but because your water-air delta is already so low the difference between fans is much less.

Hmm. I was planning to get the San Aces and run them at lower voltage because they'd still have more static pressure.

I look at it this way: No matter what fans I choose, if I want to sell them I'll have buyers. I'm going to research the GTs more. AP-15s?

Yes, AP-15s. However, you have to realize that the static pressure rating for a fan is only for it's maximum RPM. Once you undervolt the San Ace it's static pressure is going to drop and it could even go below what the GentleTyhpoon has. I suggest you check out Martin's round 6 fan testing, it really has some awesome data.

The San Ace static pressure data is available on both PPCs and Sanyo Denki web sites.

What is not as clear is RPM vs pressure. We have CFM vs pressure and I can probably extrapolate based on that, but I wish the data were available from Scythe. I found what's probably as close as I'm going to get: http://www.overclock.net/7688779-post2.html
