Overclocking GTX 460 - Some Help?

Thread Starter
So, hi guys. I'm currently happy with my GTX 460 (I know, I know, 1GB would have been better) and so far I'm currently running OCCT error checks on my overclocks. I have done the volt mod and the card's running on 1.150 volts. I have some questions, before I push it a little further:

1. What are the max recommended voltage/temps for the 460? My PSU is 550w and running on stock cooling (with a 120mm fan blowing on its side), in case you're wondering. Max I've been is 80C but average OCCT/Furmark tests were 70-75C.

2. I'm currently at 900/1800/1900 clocks*. Could I push this further or are the incremental increases not worth it anymore?

3. It's weird that I have experienced errors doing the 900 core clock yesterday on OCCT, while today all's been dandy. Why is this happening? Is it possibly due to ambient temps on the environment? I was also doing extensive, consecutive tests yesterday. Could this be also a factor?

Many thanks in advance and have a great day. I'll whip up pics later in case someone needs them.

*NOTE*

My 900 core OC's fine on OCCT but getting errors on 3DMark. IMO not worth it, so I'll revert to 890/1780/1900 or even 877/1754/1900 at 1.087 volts.

the clocks you have gotten to are pretty awesome if you ask me...my brother's 460 would only do 850 core (that's all i remember lol)

Thanks. I'm still testing my OC, now up to 1950 Memory and so far OCCT tests ran fine. Furmark though got up to an hour or so, and when I tried to stop it the computer just rebooted all of a sudden - must be because I rapidly moved the window or something. Will do testing at 1.15V, any further and I don't think the 460 would last.

1.15 volts? where are you reading your voltage from?

max voltage allowed is 1.087. 900 core seems average for gtx 460. I say leave it at that, but if you wish, you can push further and see how far you can get.

I always like doing game testing after furmark or any kind of gpu stability test to make sure it's actually stable in game where environment changes a lot, so that GPU isn't seeing one steady environment. There have been times where I had passed stress testing but it crashed or artifacted in game, but that's just me, I like to "double check" with game

Are you sure you need that much voltage for those clocks? I've been able to get 900/1800/2200 without going past the 1.087V limit, though I have flashed my card to allow up to 1.2V or so. I just remember someone killed one of their cards when they did that much. Might not have been the cause of the cards death, but I am not risking this card right now, and I am happy at these clocks anyway. 1.2V only managed to get me to 935 on the core anyway, and the heat went way up. My card will rarely see 50 C in a long gaming session, and might hit around 60 C after hours of load with Kombuster or something. I've never owned a card that ran this cool before. Does yours have the reference cooler on it?

^ Well, 1.087V doesn't cut it for my 460 even at 880 Core. Then again this card might not be a reference design (Galaxy brand) so that might be the reason.

My max temperature running 1.15V is 80C on Furmark, so I think it's fine. I'll try going back to 1.087 with 900 Core and run some OCCT error checking, but from my experience, most likely artifacts will occur.

EDIT: Woah, reboot at Vantage. Reverting to last stable overclock @ 890/1780/1900 1.125 volts. Let's see how this goes.

Judging from the results I got from 3DMark 06 and Vantage, the OC I'm getting isn't getting my points higher. At a paltry average of 50-80 marks difference from a massive increase in voltage/clocks just isn't worth it, IMO.

I'll stick with my best safe overclock, 877/1754/1980 at 1.087 volts. Thanks guys for sharing your insights anyways.
