What speed is my i7 920 running at?

Hi!

I'm kind of confused, because when I am checking the current speed of my CPU, in some programs it shows a cpu ratio of 20 and in others it shows 21.

When the CPU is stock @ 2.67, it shows 2.8ghz in Cpu-z, hwinfo32, and shows 2.67ghz in all 3dmark programs, memtest86 and Catalyst control center.
The problem is when i start overclocking. If I try a 4ghz, it says 4ghz in the BIOS and in Cpu-z and hwinfo32. But in all 3dmark programs and some others it shows 3.8ghz.

Here is a picture showing many programs:

So what speed am I really on?

Have you got Turbo mode enabled in the BIOS, that could be why your frequency is changing so much; it ups the clocks under load.

Is that the same as speedstep? Because I turned that off.

CPU-Z should be accurate.

As has been said, at stock, turbo boost will raise the multiplier of the chip if everything is within a certain TDP limit.

The 3.8GHz you see in some programs when OCing is because many programs (including windows itself) do not consider the Turbo multiplier when reporting CPU speed.

Speed Step and Turbo Boost are not the same thing. If you are using a 21 multiplier on an i7 920, you are using Turbo Boost.

Speedstep, i believe turns down the clocks when there is no load however turbo ups the clocks when there is load; Speedstep is power saving and turbo is performance

Have you got "Loadline Calibiration" turned on or of? That will have noting to do with it, lol.

The answer is both!

The I7's have a turbo mode which squeezes an extra multiplier out of the chip if it needs it, so the default is 20x multiplier, but if the chip needs some extra power when using heavy duty programs or games it will use 21x multiplier.

So as an example your I7 is currently running at stock settings which is 20 x 133 = 2660 (or 2.66ghz), then if you run a game and turbo mode is on you will then be running 21 x 133 = 2793 (or 2.8ghz).

You can turn turbo mode off in the Bios if you want

but it does no harm and gives you an instant overclock boost if your not going for extreme overclocks.

Hope this helps
