Internet Kiosk PC - How?

Thread Starter
Okay, so a few kiddy cousins are coming to live with my family for a week or so.

I'm planning to turn my 9 year-old Dell into an Internet kiosk PC.

I've seen computers at my local airport being locked to just IE.

They cannot exit the browser - the screen is forever at IE, no Ctrl+Shift+Esc/Alt+Ctrl+Del or Windows key commands will work.

How do I do that for free?

have you looked into setting users with limitations?

You can force Windows to logon with IE in kiosk mode using the regedit offered by MS here.

If that old Dell happens to still be running XP, then go ahead and download Windows Steady State and further lock the machine down from there.

The best part of SteadyState is once you have your settings configured, just reboot the PC and it's right back to where you had it should something somehow get changed.

There are a few ways to go about this:

1) Forcing the user profile to only allow IE to run:How To Kiosk

2) Another is using a combination of both with the -k flag: iexplore.exe -k forces IE to run in kiosk mode, then you can lock the account permissions via GPO.

You can use a free program called steady state. The settings are very granular and you can give or take away privledges really easily through the GUI. We use it here at work for the Handicap PC that the public has access too. It will only show the Handicap program unless you provide the admin password.

Thanks for the help.

Okay, so if I create a new user profile for Internet access, I can just make sure gpedit works its magic on that account, and when I log back in on my account I will have all my stuff there, right?

Also yes; the Dell is running XP Pro, and I have IE 8 with all add-ons (Java, Flash, etc.) installed.

Yeah, as long as you know your way around gpedit you should be okay. Remember though, that group policy edits will affect ALL accounts on a non-domain system without some trickery.

Nice.

I presume it has settings for disabling the taskbar, right-click and other Windows keyboard shortcuts as well, save for things like Ctrl-C + Ctrl-V.
