I wanted to record the progress for my first so that my mistakes could be seen by others so that other noob like me will not make them too. I hope that it helps.

I built a simple Computer years ago in 2001. So with that said this is going to be a true first try for me. (this log is dated to show progress as it is now)

I use TigerDirect for my PC component purchases, I saved a $1,000 for the system. I ordered the following: (12/19/2010) total paid was around $1,200.00

-Intel i655K Processor (w/a free Star Trek game not sure if thats any good)
-ASUS Maximus III Formula Republic of Gamers Edition (I liked the Overclocking features although this is my first OC)
-PV7312G1600ELK (3 x 4GB) DDR3 Viper II Series 9-9-9-24 (12G total)
-Cool Master HAF 932 Black Edition case
-H70 Liquid cooler ( should have saved a bit with the case having a good fan and got the H50 where i could have moded it with the current case fan to save about $40 but oh well)
-XFX 850w Power Supply (this one is new on the market with decent reviews, looks good too with black on neon green connections and fan)

-(12/26/2010) I took the case and installed the motherboard, power supply, cables, Memory and i655k. I was still waiting on the H70 cooling to arrive.

-(12/29/2010) I installed the H70 which was simple but did have a little problem with connection. Instructions require attaching without tightening the screws but didnt mention it had to be so loose, but got it with trial and error. With my Main system which was a Dell XPS 410 and stripped from it the upgraded TV Wonder i installed and the ATI XFX HD 4650. I took the 1TB Drive (my storage drive on it) and the 250G OS drive (hoping not to have to pay for another OS).

(12/29/2010) I attached the Old 250G OS drive to the SDD Sata 1 connection and noticed the other SDD 2 slot. At this point i should have read the instructions but i am a guy of course and connected my Storage 1TB drive to the second SDD SATA spot thinking that well its called Speed so maybe it will speed up my drives (noob yes i know).

-I booted the system and got to say i was a little tired and excited to see what i got now. But as you would normally see my two dell monitors which i had connected to the system showed nothing after BIO load. The smaller (my second monitor) since i didnt set it up yet i left it set to SECAM input.

-Since nothing would appear i tried rebooted a few times with nothing happening. I choose to remove the Storage drive from the SDD2 slot and rebooted trying a few more times. Still nothing.

- Thinking its the OS and remembered a few posts that mentioned repairing through OS disk to update motherboard and cpu drives so i tried it. I would get on the screen the choices and tried repair a few times with nothing working. Saddly i then gave up and choose to install OS maybe thats it i thought. But same problems with setup on the first screen only for a few stages then nothing but a black screen with a cursor.

Great i remembered at work about the second monitor. I switched inputs from SECAM to PC and with a few choice words said out loud there was the setup screen for windows. Yes noob deleted his OS for no reason other then being stupid. Well found then that it would not take the product key since it was for a upgrade not the full install. exited that and figured i will worry about that later. Started the installs and updates at this point, taking the rest of the night.

(1/2/2011) After working and drinking recovery..

Well after all the updates i found that the drive (1TB storage and DVD) wouldnt load in the my computer but does show on the device manager. After some out side help and stress i found that i needed to reassign the drive letters in teh Computer Management Screen.

Bad news was that in the process of trying to find what i did wrong i pulled the OS drive out too hard and broken the input connection for the SATA power. (Lucky i am a 2-M tech repair tech for circuit-board) i was able to get it to work again but bought a Seagate Barracuda 2TB drive for 89.99 at Best Buy to be safe (new OS drive).

Note:
Newbies Careful with the disconnections of the drives they can break easy. opps...

Well now with that done i fix that and saw that the 1TB storage Drive was empty (panic started now) this drive contained all the outlook, quicken, photos (10 years), movies, and you name it.

From what i found it was the connecting it to the SDD2 SATA slot which formatted it to the OS drive. So now i have a blank backups drive and a blank OS drive (which i reinstalled a OS on) OS with no key. Thinking im going down fast and in flames.

I researched and found a program to unformat data on a erased or formatted drive. And yes it works. $59.99ish.

After a few days of searching A program called "EASEUS Data Recovery Wizard" I am at work again letting it run it says it found over 4,000,000,000,000GB??? of files hoping that the 1TB it started with will be there when i get home. After searching through all the BS files and recovering what i can i got the photos and some misc stuff back. Figured i would then run the program on the 250G old OS drive. and to my surprise it found it on their and would have been able to recovery the drive in full. Course damage was done and i extracted my most current files for favorites, outlook, quicken, and all the My Documents and other files the program is sweet. Hoping that i can use it to help others at work for a small price and get my money back for it.

Well this is where i left off, I called microsoft and was in shock that they really gave me a new product key after i explained what i did and did not charge me anything... Yeah i know Microsoft not nickel and diming us for once. Now the OS is active.

I started running more updates for the ASUS board and found that the motherboard was already 1901 bios so i updated to the 2001. Some of the other updates are not taking though still not sure why.

I ran the stock ASUS overclocker program (was this a bad thing?) it on its own is sitting at 3.9Ghz which is nice. Still wanting to get to 4-4.5Ghz stable constant. Any ideas before i screw this part up let me know thanks......
