Where is you PC at in your room OP? If it's tucked in a corner it could be killing you signal strength. Could you provide us with some screenshots of the network connection?
Shrimpykins is correct. 8mbps/8 megabit/8mbit = 1mb/s (1 megabyte). 16mbps is 2mb/s and so on.
Simplified; 8 count network = 1ct hard drive.
Though the speedtest the OP ran (speedtest.net) is based on mbps so he's probably getting around 200-250kb/s (reference 1024kb/s = 1mb/s).
