Mechanical gaming keyboard questions

Thread Starter
So, I've been looking for a gaming mechanical keyboard with USB and audio ports. I want something low profile, not glossy (Razer tssk) and with USB ports/audio ports.
Looking to spend a maximum of £120.

I stumbled upon the Das, 7G and the XArmor.
For me the xarmor would be perfect but i can't find one with a UK layout, and the das is expensive in europe and offers no audio ports.

My problem with the 7G is that the usb ports are usb 1.1, not 2.0. I am going to buy a high-end mouse, maybe a deathadder or a Sidewinder x8.
Would 1.1 ports support the mouse fully when plugged into the keyboard? I'm mostly going to use it for charging my iPhone and my mouse, so I'd like to know if it would affect my experience at all having 1.1 instead of 2.0 ports.

Also if you have a keyboard I missed with these features please tell me.

Oh, and is it possible to change a US layout keyboard to UK if I buy new keycaps? The small return key on US boards is what bothers me most.

Try looking at a Razor Black Widow. It uses MX blue switches, so it is clicky style, like a regular Das. There is also an "ultimate" version that lights up. The non-lit model is relatively inexpensive (around $80 US). Any keyboard can be gamed on, really. Currently I'm using a Rosewill RK9000 (MX blue mechanical keyboard) on a PS/2 port adapter, and it responds far better than the G15 I was using.

I said I don't really like the razer as its glossy and gets greasy easily. How does it compare to the lycosa mirrored in terms of gloss?

Yes, I realize this. I'm suggesting it anyway for a price/performance. Judging by pictures on Amazon (with notes), it's glossy on the boarders, not on the keys. From what you've described, you want a high-quality keyboard with macro keys, USB and Audio ports. That is not going to happen with a mechanical keyboard, and you'd be better off looking at membrane based ones, as they'll be cheaper.
If you can live with something more basic, and a glossy edge, I'd suggest the Razer or the Rosewill (which runs about the same price, but has no macro keys, USB or audio ports). In this case, there is no compromise keyboard for cheap. Even a Cherry will be relatively expensive.

1.1 vs 2.0 means nothing... its just data transfer speed... doesnt matter for periphs.

In that case I'll get the steelseries. And nah I don't want macro keys I never really used them on my old board.
Thanks

The 7V is a good board, by the way. I almost bought one instead of the Rosewill, but nobody had any in stock at the time.

Also..consider something like a G9x or G500 mouse. There is also a pretty good laser-based Steelseries mouse (I forgot the name, however).

You can change windows' recognition of the keyboard to that of UK, so you'll be hitting the same position, but the key may not look the same. Of course, you may want to contact Steelseries about UK key caps. This is also assuming you're using Windows, but I imagine there are options in Linux for changing that. I don't know, because I've never had to.

It depends on what you define as throwing money away.

I use a Rosewill RK9000 at work, and at home, and have no had any wrist pains since switching. Previously I'd been using a 1st gen G15 at home, and Logitech Wave keyboard at work. I type constantly for 8+ hours a day, and needed something that would hold up to the rigors of that, along with being lighter to the touch. In that respect, a mechanical keyboard is the antithesis of waste. In the past year of working here I've gone through 3 keyboards, and this one has already spent approximately 4 months, and feels the same as before (if that tells you how much I type). I have better speed and accuracy, as well.

I'm not going to get defensive about all of it, just giving my opinion and experiences, but to make a blanket statement regarding mechanical keyboards as a waste is rubbish.
