Noob Question - Page 2

Well the Ram is Cosair DDR3 1600FSB, so its designed to run at the speed, and its voltage setting is correct for that, I already checked that before I even started.

Bios does have an CPU clock settings in the overclocking section, I noticed thats does seem to effect the FSB, I tried it for very short time at 400, and ran test software, Which then rated my FSB at 1600, tho the computer was very unstable and had 2 BSOD, So i rolled back to normal for now till I understand more... maybe voltage setting, but could it also be multiplier settings?

I seen loads of stable OC q9550 chips using 400x8.5 with lower voltage than what mine was, I was only using 400x7.5 for a few min, temperature was well withing the safe zone, but was highly unstable and crashing in under 15min without stress tests, let alone with.

Seeing somebody else get a clock with low voltages doesn't really mean anything, for one it's dependant on motherboard.

But you have other voltages to consider, did you up your FSB voltage?

Edit:

Just had a look at that board, your CPU temps may have been ok, but what about your northbidge?

The heatsink on that NB is tiny, and based on my experience with 775 NBs, I'm assuming that must get really hot just on it's own let alone running at 400

not all chips are made equally.

That being said use the higher multi and then up the fsb. This takes some weight off the NB

Interesting...

So let me get this clear, assuming CPU has good cooling it would be better to Run 400x8.5 for 3.4ghz than it would be to run 400x7.5 for 3ghz because lower multi stress NB more?

And yes my NB only has basic heatsink, tho MB designed for 1600 so it should be fine, but I think they still good chance it might run hot, but I no way to tell right now.

I read manual over and over and the guides on here few time, tho I only understand some the things, lot still confuses me, tho I keen to learn. Maybe I hunt few other guides, maybe explaining same thing different will help it sink in more.
