Custom Rom recommendations for EVO

Thread Starter
I just rooted and am pretty lost looking for a custom rom. I was leaning toward Caulkins EViO 2 v 1.6 but figured I'd ask if anyone has any suggestions.

Congrats! Whatever you choose FIRST perform a backup with RA Recovery (Amon RA). The reason for this is to backup your RSA keys. Once you've done this you're free to try anything.. You mainly have two choices sense roms and aosp roms. Recently Cyanogen made an alpha release of 4G for AOSP (SICK!). For sense I'd recommend Calkulin's and Fresh.. I like Myn's for a day but CyanogenMod is what I run 24/7.

Make sure to get the battery squared away before any extended use. Oh and don't forget about a custom kernel.

Caulkins EViO 2 is a great rom and uses a great kernel, so the battery life is fantastic. His stuff is probably the best, but I really don't like sense UI.
If you're looking for sense based rom without the actual sense interface and would like it to have a more gingerbread look, I'd suggest tjohnsonjr's EVO-NonSense coupled with one of netarchy's SBC BFS kernels. I'm currently running netarchy-toastmod-4.3-bfs-havs-more-sbc-universal kernel from the second thread linked below. Just make sure you use a sense based kernel and not an aosp kernel.

Also, if you're looking for an aosp rom, you might want to check out Cyanongen. 4G and some other thing's are not fully running, and the batter seems to drain a little fast, but its a very nice rom.

EVO-NonSense(UPDATED 12/31)AOSP+Gingerbread Elements - netarchy-toastmod, Stable: 4.1.9.1 Beta: 4.3 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=758197

All of this, though I'd back up your keys manually while running stock as well.

Code:
adb shell
su
Code:
mkdir sdcard/nandroid/RSA-PR-BACKUP
cat /dev/mtd/mtd0 > /sdcard/nandroid/RSA-PR-BACKUP/wimax.img
Code:
busybox sed -n '/BEGIN CERTIFICATE/,$p' /dev/mtd/mtd0 > /sdcard/rsa_OEM.key
And then back those two files up on your computer as well.

Thanks for the info. Which RA recovery works for the evo? I've searched and seen a few different ones but didn't see one specifically for the evo.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by custom Kernel. Could you elaborate?

Sorry for the questions but I don't fully understand rotting and all it's complexities just yet.

Use Amon's RA recovery v2.2.1 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026

Roms come with kernels, but if you want to run a custom kernel you can just flash it after you flash the rom. As I mentioned before, you only have to worry about flashing sense roms with sense kernels. Same thing for aosp roms/kernels.

I'd recommend you download ROM Manager from the marketplace. ROM Manager doesn't support RA as it does Clockworkmod BUT it does make things much easier. I'm currently running v2.1.1 like Jocelyn recommended.

No problem, that is why I replied.. I enjoy helping and I really enjoy my EVO. I'd highly recommend you become familiar with XDADevelopers http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=619.

Applications I recommend: ROM Manager, Titanium Backup, SetCPU, LCD Density Changer, Startup Auditor, Handcent Messenger, Dropbox, WidgetLocker, Music Junk, Pulse, and Wifi Analyzer.

Nekon, is clockworkmod fixed? I mentioned RA recovery instead of Rom manager/CWM because I wasn't sure.

Yes and No.. Releases are still coming bi-daily, we're on 2.6.01 now .. I'm sticking with RA for security in knowing my keys are safe and I can see the *.IMG and move it around.

3.0.0.0 - 0.1 - 0.2 - 2.5 - 0.3 - 0.4 - 0.5 - 2.6.0.1. lol

Lol yeah! I think 3.0+ is a requirement for Cyanogen Mod 7 and was accidentally released too soon or something like that.

Ok well I went through the steps with the rom manager and backup etc. I installed caulkins and now the phone is has some psychadelic looking screen saver thing going on. It's been going now for a few minutes and I have no control over the phone. Is that normal?
