Gigabyte PSUs?

Thread Starter
Saw a bunch of Gigabyte power supplies http://www.gigabyte.com/products/list.aspx?s=51&ck=41 at the pc store where I always buy parts. Does anyone have experiences with these PSUs? My Silenzio Power (cheap, I know) is about to kick the bucket. When playing games it might or might not shut the comp down. And it's got weird sounds when I stress the system. A little annoying.. Bought the Silenzio because the box was pretty.

Or is it the motherboard that's giving in..?

Efficiency or efficiency ratings are NOT proof of quality. It just means the PSU passes a certain level of efficiency at various load levels at 25°C. It says nothing about voltage regulation, ripple suppression, etc. Please get this misconception out of your head.

Anyway... some Gigabyte units are OK, others are pretty crappy, it depends on the model. So what model(s) are you looking at?

the odin plus, odin pro and odin gt are the only ones that seem alright from them

No need to get hostile. Your statement that those PSUs "should be OK" is misleading in that it implies 80 Plus certification establishes a standard of quality, which it doesn't, and I merely wanted to correct that, in your mind and that of whoever else is reading. A lot of PSUs are 80 Plus rated, and yet still fail (stealthily or explosively) if you push them past a certain load even though their sticker claims they are rated higher than that. The Cooler Master GX series comes to mind.

Was thinking about the Odin GT 800W. Can get that one tomorrow. Any other PSU will take at least a week. Don't think the one I have now will last for much longer.. Seems like it got worse when I installed the Asus EAH6850. Started a game and it shut down the comp within minutes. Even when running the WEI it sounds like a cricket.

Eh gigabyte isn't that good. Also anandtech's psu reviews aren't that good imo.
Gigabyte's New Odin GT 800W Power Supply is a CWT psu so it should be fine.
