I don't see Sony banning accounts. I would like to think they wouldn't. I think they would follow the route of Microsoft and just ban the console.
Mass banning of consoles = increased console sales
Well, I used my JTAG and logged in with my main account like an ASS. It was a mistake. I didnt think they would ban my account, like you said - modded xbox = banned console.
It turns out that because my console got red flagged for the JTAG, so did the account I logged into it with. So they looked at my account and saw I had modified gamerscore. So they banned me for that and that alone. So stupid. Really stupid. I thought I modified it so perfectly that it wasn't noticeable but apparently it doesn't matter. The dates were all done good so it could be that either and it wasn't like I jumped 20k gamerscore at once. Progressively I was adding score over an entire month.
So just because I modified my gamerscore: I lost over 4 years of content I bought on Xbox Live and all my save data unless I play singleplayer/offline.
Lesson is - no matter how full proof you think it is: if they look at you specifically, they will figure it out. Which is why I think anyone who is going to use their custom firmware who thinks that Sony can't see that you are just because it's signed is underestimating Sony.
Granted, it makes it alot harder for Sony to do anything automatic because the hardware doesn't put up red flags for them to look at you unlike a JTAG: but if given a smallest reason to look in your direction and they do so, they will be able to tell what's on your system. I could be wrong, but I can't see why Sony wouldn't be able to detect custom software on the PS3 if they looked specifically for it, regardless of it being signed. They already monitor what's on your system as it is, they've said it and their "quests" and "reward zone" does it does it as well.

As for bannings Sony can ban me all they want, I have only been on the PSN once or twice in 2 years.
They didn't cripple my hard drive as all my save datas were stored on a seperate 360 (my main one). Problem is, I can't transfer those save datas to another account beyond my knowledge. So all my time spent in games like Borderlands are unusable unless I play singleplayer. Unless of course, there is a way you know that I don't.
