idle/load temps too high?

Thread Starter
so i have an i7 950 overclocked to 4.2ghz and a noctua heatsink with 2 fans. my idle temps are around 40C and my load temps are around 80C. are these too high? is it time to turn my clock speeds down?

The 950s run hot. I have the same chip/heatsink combo before I watercooled and your temps may be a bit too hot. At 4.0ghz with HT off, I was between 60c to 66c depending on ambient.

What are your ambient temps? What is your vcore volts? Is HT on? What are you using to load your cpu? All those play huge factors with your temps.

With HT on, at 4.2ghz with 1.4v your temps are ok. There are 4 things you can do to lower the temps if they are too high for your liking- lower the clock speed, lower the cpu volts (may make things unstable), turn off HT (prob will drop your temps by 7 to 10c), or watercool.
