+1 on this as silversones do the job just as good as corsair and cost less.

I do have a spare 520W PSU lying around and I could just dedicate it to the 295, can't really afford a brand new PSU right now.

If you do this make sure you put a HDD or something on the 5v rail, your PSU will still be generating 5v current and it will not have anywhere to go since your GPU is drawing 12v current.

You can run it with out, it's just not the best.

Some PSUs do go out of spec without at least some +5V load. Group regulated units in particular.

True, hence my point.

When I had both my 5970, GX2, and second GX2 in the system, the PSU worked and powered it folding just fine on it's own. It even powered the 470 on it's own. Jumped with a paper clip, and later soldered the green and black wires together for ease.

Can anyone explain what I asked earlier? Of the i7 965/5970 a
Spec pulling 400W at the wall, does this mean 400W from the PSU, or doesn't it translate that way?

It's odd that the workings of PSUs are the thing I know least about,

If it's 393W from the wall, that means it is 393W after factoring in efficiency. Taking the PSU efficiency for roughly 85%, it would translate to a power draw of roughly 334W from the PSU.

Do note that the setup in the review is all at stock settings, and we have no idea how he stressed the GPU to obtain the load power reading, so it's not exactly a great reference.

I'd definitely run your HX650 on the i7 and 5970 alone, and the spare PSU on the GTX295.

Thanks for clearing that up Baldy.

Judging by that I think I have the headroom. I may as well just try it, what's the worst that can happen?

I run all of my stuff at stock anyhow, Pretty much everyone said it couldn't do my 5970 + 470, but it did for about a month before I sold the 470. Was folding too.

I'd suggest getting a Kill-A-Watt.
