How wonderful internet companies are

Thread Starter
In about a week I will be moving to winter park, FL. And today I had the pleasure of talking to numerous internet companies. First up Brighthouse. Great company, great prices, great speed. They service the central florida area. 40 megs down and 5 megs up for $77.95 a month? Sign me up! So I had the pleasure of knowing they service my area code 407 then they said wait a minute we dont service Whisper Lake Apartments they have the pleasure of servicing everyone else in the area of a 50 mile radius.

Think of a circle, a big circle, 50 miles big, and in that big circle picture the whole thing is serviced. Now picture that in that circle there is a tiny dot in the middle they said **** that dot we are not going to service that tiny dot.

So you start to wonder, why not? Well let's see your apartment complex is not contracted with us only comcast has. Comcast basically slipped some money under the table and said don't let any company come in here and service the complex and tell all of your residents this is the #1 company in the area.

Fair enough I decide I'll go with comcast aka *****cast so I go onto their website it asks you to enter your address and apartment number to see what services they offer. I type my information in and it says here is the internet tiers we provide for your apartment and here are the prices. I scroll until I find the biggest bandwidth tier available 16 megs down and 2 up for $52.95 per month it's a very big step down from brighthouse but apparently we grown ups love money and love to play the game of monopoly. So I call comcast to sign up for the 16 meg service and they said we don't service 16 meg in that area in fact we don't service 16meg service anywhere in the world we just put a big number up there to look cool. Okay so what speeds do you service in this area she says "8meg down 2meg up" I say **** back to dial up speeds. I ask her why her website says for whisper lake apartments we service a 16mbps down connection she said well we like to false advertise. Okay she didn't say that but she wanted to say that deep down.

I ask her the price of it and she says "$72.95" and I immediately just hang up the phone and decide to call centurylink aka *****link and they said they offer a 3meg service for a whopping low rate price of $59.95 a month. The guy on the said "But if your only using one computer I recommend just the 1.5meg service for $54.95 a month." I immediately just hung up on him.

I call up the office to my apartment complex and ask the nice lady why don't you guys contract with Brighthouse she said because Comcast is better. I was like how do you figure paying $72.95 a month for 8megs down is better then paying $77.95 a month for 40meg down. She just started laughing and that made me so angry I mean just furious I started picturing her with horns, wearing a red suit, and her eyes having a $ signs coming out of them. At this point I'm so pissed I just hang up on her too. Yea I hung up on my landlord.

I mean how stupid do you have to be to buy into this bull****. Well obviously there are a lot of ******* stupid people at that complex because everyone uses comcast and she says how everyone there uses it because it's the best. Well maybe they use it either a) because they have no choice or b) just complete morons.

I swear to god people need to start speaking up or something. These companies are overcharging for these half @$$ services there not even half services it's more like a quarter. When you start looking at these services these companies serve and the prices on them. Do people even question what there buying.

I guess not.

p.s. holy **** this post is long if you actually read all this **** then I salute you for tolerating bull*****

That was pretty entertaining, actually.

If you have enough money, go pay a company to install a dedicated fiber optic line to your house

You're experiencing reality. It's BS, but it's there. I'm at my mom's place in Minnesota at the moment, and we've had Comcast here with solid service and customer support since '04. I've heard of people getting boned by companies though...

Right now, Comcast is giving us 12 Mbps service and it's like $50 even for long-time subscribers (your area must have jacked prices...), though we did have 16 at one point. The numbers don't matter though it seems, because even on this 12Mbps service, Speedtest.net consistently gives me results like this.

I had the same problem at my apartment. $60 for 3mb down and 1mb up. I could never get above 2.5mb down, and basically all streaming video was off limits. They owned the lines to building and we weren't allowed to mount dishes, so I had to buy cable and internet from this company.

It still makes me rage. I'm back on comcast now after I moved out and I have never appreciated them so much.

8/2 dialup speeds? Pfft, stop complaining.
Also, I highly doubt the rep flat out says "we like to false advertise".

The thing with Comcast is their "PowerBoost" crap. The first 10 MB of a file is boosted up to double the internet speed, after that it goes back down to 8.
