I am very new to linux so please assume that I haven't tried a whole lot. I Bought a Icy Dock external HDD enclosure with a Silicon Image 5744 Chipset. The USB is working fine on Ubuntu however I can only seem to get the ESATA to work on my win7 laptop.

The Icydock web site has a configuration manager for linux 32/64 here http://www.icydock.com/product/mb662us-2s_frame.html

I downloaded it, opened the tar to find a PDF with the following directions,

Quote:
Linux
Use the following procedure to launch the SteelVine Manager on a Linux system.
1. Change to the directory in which the SteelVine Manager GUI and daemon software was installed (such as /usr/local/SiliconImage)
2. Start the daemon by entering the command: ./SiI57XX -e
3. Open a new terminal window and start the GUI by entering the command: ./SiI57XXUI
I did exactly that I all I get is,

Code:
$cd /usr/local/SiliconImage
$ls
icons
SiI Config
SteelVine
SteelVineManager
SteelVineManagerHelp.pdf
sv2000.xpm
Translations
$
$ ./SteelVine
bash: ./SteelVine: No such file or directory
obviously there isnt SiI57XX. anyone have any ideas?

i just tried sudo ...

still got the same, no such file message. The SteelVine and SteelVineManager MUST be the files that the PDF is talking about but the names dont match. I dont really know what to do now... ;(

i did some more digging, found that the tar I downloaded is for "FC6" would that be fedora core 6? that should work with Ubuntu 10.10 right?

Try
Code:
./SteelVine -e
and in another terminal
Code:
./SteelVineManager
I think they changed the names without updating the faq.

Try to chmod 775 it and do what evermooingcow suggested. I have no doubt the documentation is out of date. I downloaded it and looked through the full documentation and found this below those directions.

Generally it's just 755, read/write/exec to the user, read/write to the group. read/write to everyone. You can also do 754, that's the other big popular one. I mean, I guess you can do 775 but most places will only specify 755 so that the file is only executable to the owner.

http://www.analysisandsolutions.com/code/chmod.htm

That's a good read out on the permissions.

it doesn't say exactly that. It says,
Quote:
Note: The SteelVine Manager User’s Guide presents screens that were captured using Microsoft Windows XP. If a dialog appears differently on the Macintosh and Windows operating systems, Mac OS X images are presented in addition to the Windows images. Linux images are not presented.
which i read as, there are no screen shots.

I did manage to find the "quick installation guide" but its for the 47xx chipset. it read,

Quote:
Procedure
1. Turn off your host computer.
2. Connect one end of the external SATA cable to the external SATA
connector on your host computer. If needed, install the SV-HBA3124
card and driver (see the SV-HBA3124 Quick Installation Guide).
3. Connect the other end to the SiI 4726 Storage Appliance.
4. If hard disk drives are not installed in the appliance, insert the drives
most of the way into each bay; flip out the drive carrier lever, gently
insert the drive carrier until the drive is almost fully inserted, and
push the lever shut to seat the drive securely.
5. Attach one end of the AC cable to the SiI 4726 Storage Appliance
and the other end to the proper AC receptacle.
6. Turn on the SiI 4726 Storage Appliance.
7. Turn on the host computer.
8. Change directory to /dev.
9. Verify an unpartitioned SiI 4726 disk is visible. The final sdN disk in
the list of enumerated SCSI disks represents the SiI 4726 processor.
Do not initialize or partition this SiI 4726 processor disk.
10. If you plan to use the currently defined configuration, format the
unpartitioned disk so it is recognized as a volume. Otherwise, follow
these steps to install the SiI 4726 Manager software:
• Log in to your host computer as the root user.
• Insert the SiI 4726 installation CD in the CD-ROM drive.
• Open the installation CD and select the Linux folder.
• Copy the SiI 4726r_V<number>.tgz file to /usr/local on your
Linux host.
• Change directory to /usr/local.
• To expand the copied file, type the following command:
tar xvfz SiI 4726r_V<number>.tgz (or
./setup.sh)
• Change directory to /usr/local/SiI 4726.
• To start the SiI 4726 daemon, type the following command:
./SiI4726 -e (alternative: type
./start_server.sh in /usr/local directory)
• To start the SiI 4726 Manager, open a new terminal window, log
in as a non-root user, and type the following command:
./SiI4726UI (alternative: type
./start_client.sh in /usr/local directory)
• Follow the instructions in the SiI 4726 Manager User's Guide to
create logical volumes (virtual disks).
• Use appropriate Linux commands for your environment to create
partitions on the virtual disks.
• Use appropriate Linux commands for your environment to create
and mount file systems on the partitions.
i looked at the /dev/disk/ and didn't find the external drive there. should i be looking at something other than disk?

chmod 755 SteelVine

or

chmod 755 SteelVineManager

Whatever one is the file you need to run, then do your ./SteelVine or ./SteelVineManager and things should work out. chmod 755 makes a program executable to the owner.

Open a terminal, and cd to the folder.

Run:

Code:
./SteelVine -e
The cursor should blink but should not return to a new line. Open another terminal and cd to the directory.

Code:
./SteelVineManager
