This review should have been up a couple weeks ago.
But, due to a mistake made by my part, my CPU was fried and it took a little over a week to get a new CPU in.
It isn't the same CPU as I used in the Silver Arrow review, but, I have configured this one to match the other one.
The one I used before was a Xeon L5506 which is a 4 core/4 thread 1366 chip.
Now, I am using an i7 920, but, for the sake of similarities, I have turned off HT to make it 4 threads.
So, it shouldn't offer a difference among temps. If I am wrong, please, let me know and I will add that info to the review.
I don't want anyone to be misinformed by my lack of consistency.
On to the review!

Introduction

Coolers are always evolving.
New technologies are developed, new ideas, new metals, new looks.
They are, in a general way, like combustion engines.
The basic premise is the same throughout all of them. The same basic structure.
But through innovation and engineering, the creators of these coolers try to get as much out of them as possible.
They try to refine and improve the long-used theories of heat dissipation.
As new coolers are released, they get better and better each time.
Each time they are refined for just a little bit better performance. Companies like Thermalright and Scythe are well known for this.
What I have with me today is the latest from Thermalright.
The Archon.
Just by looking at it, you notice that it is quite a bit smaller than the big, performance monsters such as the NH-D14.
But, Thermalright, being as experienced as they are, may have a few surprises for us.
For instance, it is very thin. But, the total surface area is 1.6 times that of the Venomous X.
Could this be the cooler that matches both size with performance?
Read on my ill-conceived friend. Read on.

Testing

I will be comparing it to the Silver Arrow.
They both will be using 2x TY140 fans and tested on high and low mounting pressures.

Test System:
Intel i7 920
EVGA X58 SLI LE
2x2gb OCZ Platinum DDR3
MSI GTX 470
Sunbeam UCTS TechStation

Testing Software:
Prime95
CPUID HWMonitor
CPUID CPU-Z

Ambient Temperature: 22C

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Low Pressure Testing (40lbs):

Silver Arrow:

Idle Temperature - 37.75C
Load Temperature - 60.75C

Archon:

Idle Temperature - 40C
Load Temperature - 65C

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

High Pressure Testing (70lbs):

Silver Arrow:

Idle Temperature - 33.25C
Load Temperature - 57.75C

Archon:

Idle Temperature - 40C
Load Temperature - 64C

Conclusion

First, I want to say that this cooler is pretty expensive considering its competitors.
Its performance is, from what I've experienced, a tad better than a Venomous X.
That being said, it's as expensive as the Silver Arrow. Which is quite a bit better.
So, its price/performance isn't exactly stellar, or even good.
This is all just on the performance, though.
I cannot deny that this is a great cooler.
Comparing it directly to a Silver Arrow is a little one-sided as they offer different uses.
As I stated in the intro, coolers are about refinement. This cooler is not a Silver Arrow killer. It isn't supposed to be.
It's not supposed to hang with the high performance coolers (at least, I would hope not).
It is a refinement over the Venomous X. Which was a refinement over the TRUE.
When you look at it from other angles than performance, you start to see the reasoning behind it.
Its slim shape doesn't cover any of the ram slots.
Its slim shape makes it quieter.
Its slim shape makes one fan more than enough.
See what I am getting at here?
It isn't a new, performance blasting super-cooler.
It's a a small cooler squeezing out more power.
Or, going back to my engine analogy, it's a small 4-cylinder engine tuned to give just that bit more power without the disadvantages of a big V8 or such.

But unfortunately, all that is spoiled because it costs the same as that big V8.
Most people will suck up the Silver Arrow's size and lack of practicality for the fact that it is just that much better for the same cost.
Unless you really need that extra space, there is no reason to buy this one over the Silver Arrow or another cooler of that class.
That price tag gets even more scary when you figure the cost of adding the second fan that the Archon doesn't come with.
This truly is disappointing.
Something that is so remarkable in that it offers everything you want, but at the cost you don't want.
With all the facts and opinions given, the rest is up to you.

Thermalright Archon - 6.5/10

GReat review!!!! makes me feel like I made a good purchase with my D-14 tongue.gif.. however I my be replacing it with water this spring/summer suggestions welcome.. pm me don'w wanna hijack the thread

Hmm. The previous reviews put this ahead of the Silver Arrow, the D14 and the rest. These are very interesting results.

One thing I would like to know: could you measure the thickness of the contact block? The part that sits on the cpu. It would be nice to be able to mount an Archon or a Silver Arrow with a Prolimatech or a Noctua mount.

Yeah, I noticed that. The HARD[OCP] review of it showed it being 3C hotter than the Silver Arrow with 1.45v. Although they were using a temperature sensor placed between the CPU IHS and the cooler base.

And yeah, I'll get the thickness for you. It's actually the exact same as the HR-02 and the Silver Arrow. I've been using the same mounts on all of them.
