Old Dell worth folding on?

Thread Starter
So I have an old Dell Dimension E520 that I was considering pulling out of the closet for folding, what I would like to know is if it would be worth the effort of setting it up and monitoring it or if the PPD increase would be negligable?

CPU: C2D E6300 1.86GHz
GPU: ATI X1300 Pro 256MB

Now another option I was considering was swapping out the GPU for one I could get a nice deal on. What kind of GPU do you think it could handle? What would you fellow folders recommend?

Thanks!

a C2D depending on the clock...is 4-7.5k ppd i believe.

go for at least an 8800 series nvidia card, as long as you have a pci-e plug on your psu

It's a pci-e according to dell's site

http://www.dell.com/us/en/dfh/deskto...&~tab=specstab
Quote:
Expansion Slots
PCI: 2 Slots
PCIe x1: 1 Slot
PCIe x16 (Graphics): 1 Slots
And I can probably expect ~5.5k then? It's a low clocked one, although it was top of the line

Yes it would be worth folding on. It has a PCIe socket so you could get a nice card for it. Lets say a GTX460/470 or even an old 9800GX2 is good for a ton of points for not a lot of money (people typically selling them for ~$100).

With the right setup, that old Dell could pump out in excess of 20k per day.

give or take, id say more 4.5-4.7k cause you cant OC it 5-5.5k on a fast unit.

I say yes...Thats how I get my farms going. Buy old systems to fold with and add a good card. I buy some of the C2D units cheap...I mean dirt cheap then go from there. Add a GT450 to run with the stock psu.

Chuck D
Fold on...

P.S. I even have an old P-D 960 folding with a GT450 card...
