Case air flow

So, I've been pondering this... what's really the best method? Positive pressure, negative pressure or even?

I never really understood the argument to the different methods as long as your plan for air flow in the case was logical. Maybe I didn't pay enough attention in physics class?

What's everybody's take?

I dont worry about pressure so much as my airflow path. I have all the air come in from the bottom and go out the top and back. My rig sits about 6 inches off the ground on a stand built into my desk. So it pulls all the cooler air on the ground in and pushes the hot air out the top and back. thats how I have seen the best temps. Not sure if this is positive or negative.

Its one of those things you just have to test out because its different for every1

Its better to have negative pressure. (more fans blowing air out that pulling air in)
that way, you'll get more head out of your PC case.
The only downside to this is that you will attract dust a little more but it can be avoided with some filters on your intake fans.

Here's mine. The key is to have open exit paths for your airflow. The big red arrows are warmed air from the Mugen 2 going out where the rear grill used to be. No grill, no fan. The little red arrows represent air warmed by the mb going out through open backplane slots - I left the unused slots uncovered.

This rig can't really develop much of a positive pressure because the exit paths are so open. Everything just flows easily.

Of course, you have to choose the right case to do this. Antec tombs generally have a hard time with airflow.

I have positive pressure in all of my cases, but not by my own design. That's just the way the fan holes are built. I've never bought into the one being better than the other, but feel free to disagree. That ckybam3 dude was right about airflow, though: Cool air in at the bottom, hot air out at the top. Most cases are designed to do that front to back but a few, such as the Lian-Li PCA05, are designed to go back to front.

I just Googled the Fractal Design Arc that is in your signature, and it looks like you'll have plenty of room to play around with fan configuration. Do some tests of your own and see what works best with your setup

I'm confused about your post...

If the fans are pulling the air out(exhaust).... how is it getting dust the fans then? Isn't it the other way around if the air is pulling *Into(intake) the case.. then the fans will get allot of dust... since it brings the air / dust from the room onto the case.... inside your case you should not have any dust in it unless something is wrong there

I mean that is what i notice looking at my 9 fans... only 3 are Exhaust(rear fan, 2 x top fans) and those ones have very little dust on it.. all the other ones (intake) always get allot of dust.

Intakes will always get dust on then and exhaust fans wont.
The reason why negative air pressure attracts dust is because it creates a (small) vacuum inside the case, attracting more dust particles through every crack on your case and of course through the intake fans.

The best example of a true negative pressure case is your vacuum cleaner: one honking exhaust fan. The dust comes in, swirls around, settles down and stays. Back when I had Dells, my cases were like that - just big vacuum cleaners.

again its whatever works best in your case and environment. If you got it on the ground cooler air can come in so you want it coming in from below. If you got it on a desk or whatever it might be setup differently since your not getting the coolest air from the ground but just the room temp air.

Always keep in mind that hot air rises so imo you always want your exhausts at the highest points of the case (top and back).
