Anyone running a 5450 in their HTPC? - Page 2

I used an XFX 5450 to build a HTPC. It's hooked up to a Mitsubishi 83" 1080p DLP. 4gb ram, amd 255 (3ghz dualcore), win7 ultimate 64, 2TB caviar green, runs flawless. Our setups are very similar other than the tv and possibly software.

Which movies looked compressed on your setup? Id like to test some movies over the next few days and try to replicate your issue.

Anyways, im really impressed w/ these ATI 5450's. Picked up another on newegg, $24 after rebate. Buying electronics in the USA is so cheap

I'm wondering if this is just because the 5450 has barely enough power to handle 1080p. I'm considering upgrading to a 5570 to remedy it but I don't want to do it if this isn't the issue.

Anyone else with a 5450 notice this? Oh yeah, it happens in all software players (Power DVD, WMC, VLC, etc).
Does your TV do any post-processing?

Thanks all for the replies. The TV doesn't do any post processing that I am aware of. Its a 3 year old plasma so that means a 60Hz refresh rate I believe?

I noticed the issue again last night while watching the Battlestar Galactica pilot on DVD. I don't recall having this issue with my GTX260 so I'm going to swap that in there and see if it makes any difference. I will report back. Oh yeah, using an HDMI cable (v 1.4 I believe). I'll try both power DVD and WMC players.

Ok, just got home and tested my sig rig side by side with my HTPC rig. I wanted to put the 260 into my HTPC but my power supply doesn't have the connectors required for the video card.

It looks like the 5450 is the issue because it looks fine with the GTX260 which has a lot more processing power. That said, most people probably wouldn't even notice this but I am very particular so I tend to notice this kind of thing. I wish I could explain how it looks on the 5450 better but I'll try another explanation in addition to what I've offered in the past posts. Imagine a still camera focusing on a still scene, for example, a living room. Now if nothing in the room moves, but the camera moves just an inch to the left and then an inch to the right, the parts of the room don't all move atthe same speed... like, when the camera stops moving, parts of the room have to keep moving to "catch up" with the camera. The delay isn't huge, probably a couple of milliseconds but it IS noticeable to me.

Also of note is that my plasma is 1080p, and my resolution is set as such, so the card does have to upconvert the DVD to 1080p. According to the Anandtech article here:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/3601/t...deon-htpc-card the 5450 just BARELY has enough power to handle HD playback, and there is no power left to do any kind of post-processing. That leads me to believe that while the card can handle HD playback, it isn't going to be as fast/fluid/smooth as a higher powered card like a 5570 (or my GTX 260).

Don't get me wrong, the 5450 works just fine and most people would probably never notice, but I can see it and it bugs me. I'm going to upgrade to a 5570.

Interesting. Make sure you post back when your 5570 does the same thing j/j

I still don't think it is the card though. You really proved nothing by playing it on your sig rig since there are other things that can be causing the problem. put your 5450 in your sig rig and play it, bet you will have no problems.

I don't know why I didn't think to put the 5450 in my sig rig... I was so focused on getting my GTX260 in my HTPC that it didn't occur to me. I just tried it, downloaded the latest drivers from XFX and experience the same issue. I also notice that compared to my 260, the video looks very red hued on the ATI card, but I always noticed that. I know you can tweak that in the Catalyst control center.

Hopefully the 5570 I bought will perform better. Even if it doesn't, I'll post an update here when I receive it which should be sometime next week.

I hate to say it, but considering that others of us have the 5450 and it seems to be fine in our rigs, do you think you might have a bad card?

It is possible..... its an XFX card so I guess I could always send it in for warranty after I get the 5570 in and see what kind of a difference it makes. I'll report back when the 5570 is in and I can test it out.

Yea, kind of sounding like a card problem.

If it's not working as you'd expect and like others experience, I'd contact XFX for a replacement / service.
