Anyone running a 5450 in their HTPC? - Page 3

haha, this is definitely a hardware issue. seems you got a bad card. i throw INSANE bd files/backups (not rips) at my 5450 in my updated rig (havent posted it yet), and it doesnt lag at all, no hiccups, no ghosting, no dropped frames or anything whatsoever.

im someone that NEEDS perfection, otherwise i blow up at it. lol.

Well, I hate to admit it, but you're right, FTW. The 5570 isn't showing any improvement for the issue I'm experiencing. I'm being completely honest here so please no one give me a bunch of crap on this At the very least, according to Annandtech, the 5570 has more power to perform post-processing on video so once I figure out how to actually take advantage of that, it will be a better card than the 5450. I'll probably give away the 5450 here once I've figured out how to take full advantage of the 5570.

The Annandtech site talks about post processing abilities of various cards. What I don't really understand is where you really take advantage of this (using shaders to help smooth the video etc). I've seen some settings in the Catalyst Control Panel, but not quite sure if this is all I have to work with, or if I should work with configurations in the software video player instead... or both? I can't find any information on the best way to configure the CCM for smoothest video.

One thing I did notice in testing is that when I play the same DVD in PowerDVD 8 vs Media Player Classic, it looks much, much better in Media Player Classic. I can still see some delay in movement but it's nowhere near as bad as in PowerDVD8 and in PowerDVD8, everything takes on a red hue... skin looks sunburned etc. I haven't touched any settings in any of the software players I am using.

So what do you folks use to tweak post processing? Do you adjust in CCM, in the software player, or both? Any opinions on the best software player? I've heard good things about Arcsoft's product but there are just so many opinions out there... and a lot of them from people who've only ever used ONE player, yet claim the one they use is the best. Makes it really tough to figure out which to use.

Well, i won't say we told you so, but...

I really have no idea what to adjust though. I have 3 HTPC's, all using Windows 7 without any extra codecs or drivers and they display everything I watch just fine (HULU, .iso DVD rips, regular DVD's, HDTV, Netflix, other HD streams). I do see some pixilation in HULU streams, but that is because it is a 480 stream, not a video card issue.
My 1080 monitor is using 4200 onboard (had the 5450 in it for a while), my SD TV is using an 8600 GT and a 1050 monitor with a GT210).

From their website, its not immediately clear what kinds of post-processing enhancement controls it has, if any. Have you played around with any of that stuff?

Hi,

I use Media Player Classic - Home Cinema and the Core Community Codec Pack for playback.
As far as I can tell: full gpu acceleration and support for use of image enhancement using pixel shaders.
Download MPC-HC and CCCP and when installing CCCP, let it manage the settings in MPC-HC.
For use of the pixel shaders, during playback right click and select Shaders -> Combine Shaders and try out a few to see which one or combos you like best.

Cheers!

what model panasonic? i have a 42" panasonic plasma from 07' 42pz77u. i have no issues like this and im using only onboard graphics so im assuming your card should be doing better than mine. but if its a similar tv we can probably rule the tv out.

maybe ATI catalysts has some sort of enhancement on that your not aware of?

Yeah, we have the exact same TV, mine is a 42PZ77U as well. Since we have the same TV, have you had any problems with yours? On mine, the audio drops out when connected via HDMI cables. Dropout is random and lasts for 2 seconds.... happens about once every hour or so. It doesn't affect me anymore since I have a small surround sound system hooked up so I don't use the TV sound but curious to see if you've had any sound issues. I also started to get vertical black bars on the display so took it into the service center who tested and found it had a bad plasma display! It was covered under warranty (parts only) thankfully but I'm pretty disappointed with the reliability. Panasonic is supposed to make the best plasmas

Back to the issue.... it really seems to vary depending on what player i'm using. Some players work better than others. I have the latest ATI drivers and have configured CCC to use vector adaptive interlacing. In the right player, I'm not noticing the issue so much but its tough to tell for sure because I haven't been watching many movies lately.

Ahh wow no I haven't had any of those issues... Not one problem since i bought it and i bought it as an open box from best buy. I believe the previous owner had it repaired for the faulty power supply or power board... I bought it after service.

I used to have issues where when i would turn the tv off then on I would have no audio but it wound up being a driver issues for the inboard audio. Had to go to the motherboard site for drivers.
