I think so too. That or they'll have something awesome but unpredictable and nerf it before releasing the game, like they did with Radiant AI.

I'm wondering what exactly this means:

Randomized (generated) quests like Daggerfall or does it just mean that the game has a repertoire of quests and you only get to do some of them? (or both)
I'm guessing its the latter, possibly with bits of the former added...Being realistic there will just be a pool of "Raiders kidnapped/killed/stole my husband/expensive item, can you get him/it back?" style quests where you get good loot or the like.

^ and it will be in a cave/area that takes forever to get to because you have not discovered the location yet. Once you get there you will forget to save your game and auto save is not enabled and you die from some weird cat plant and have to start all over. I love Elderscrolls.

More like it'll be in a random cave and on the way there you'll find like a dozen other ruins/tombs/castles/etc and explore each of them and totally forget about your quest.

No developer of a game has ever had the feedback that The Elder Scrolls fans give. If there is a problem with the game the modding community takes care of it. All they have to do is sit down and look at the most popular mods for their game and realize where something needs to be changed to make it better. In my opinion it simply does NOT get better than that. Nor easier to figure out. I'm not saying they have easy jobs nor am I bashing them. I'm just saying that if they want to make this game better than Oblivion just look at the most common downloaded mods and you have it right there.

I guess that's why the idea of leveled areas/creatures turns me off. They are some of the top downloaded Oblivion mods. I like what they have done with the idea of moving a quest to a different area if you haven't explored it (though I'm not sure if it is based on exploration or killing a number of creatures in that area or getting an item from there or whatever), but that forces them to level creatures and areas based on what you have done or not done. And people LIKE the feeling of crushing a certain type of monster/bad guy because you are just mightier and have earned that power and right over your opponent. It is its own reward. And it is cool to have an area you have to build up to to fight and get the loot.

Ultimately the devs have to make a hard choice based on the three aspects of going through a game like this:

Main Quests
Side Quests
Exploration (with/without quests but things to be done and found)

And then how to incorporate them together. Me personally I'm fine with a setup where I have to do a decent amount of Side Quests and Exploration to get the levels/power to do the Main Quest. And I think that the best weapons should be from off hand Exploration and Crafting not related to the core of the game. As well in this I realize that with my "setup" of the game, if a person did enough Side Quests and Exploring before the majority of the Main Quests they wouldn't have a problem beating the game. Why? Because they are practically a God at that point. And that is realistic.

Otherwise you have to make a challenge for these people as well. And the only way to do that with fixed areas/creatures is to make it so that you need to do everything in the game first in order to complete the Main Quest. And not everyone is gonna like running around all day like that.

They chose the third route though. And with leveled stuff they didn't do a good job in Oblivion. I hope they learned some lessons is all. On a final note I can't friggin WAIT for this game!!!
Exactly. One of the reasons why I loved Morrowind and Oblivion was just meh. If they really wanted to make areas off limits or challenging, they should make the baddies in those areas significantly tougher up to a certain level. A simple cave with minimal loot would have easier enemies, a complex cave with an ultimate piece of armor or weapon should have much tougher enemies.

It's more of a choice that way. If you think you are so tough, try to explore this area and see if you survive or not. Rather then it being, you can explore anywhere you want but the game will determine how hard the area is based on your level, and not on the area or your skill.

Some of us are "game mechanic experts," at least within the confines of this series. Why the hell else would we be on this thread, nerding up a storm? The problems with the level-scaling are apparent to anyone who's spent a large amount of time in both Morrowind and Oblivion.

In in reply to the notion that we have no idea what it'll be like:

1) We have a pretty specific description from the article, and it sounds like a bit more complex form of Oblivion's system.

2) In the end, we don't NEED every single little detail, because some of us have thoroughly experienced both Morrowind and Oblivion and have already determined which system more fits this series.

The level scaling is based on Fallout 3's, which is much better. Hopefully they'll make it even better.
