Round 2 (or is this 8?) with Arch - Page 3

some are, some aren't. You have to figure out what ones sync up on time, I think it's on the wiki.

They should be. There is a python script called rankmirrors that you should run that will test all of your mirrors and order them by speed. Its in the beginner's guide.

My guess is that since the CD version of Arch is from March 2010 that the latest version of Firefox in March 2010 was 3.6.8.

The first thing you should do when you install Arch is do a pacman -Syu to ensure you get all of the required packages.

Whenever I install Arch I just do a net install so I get the latest packages right away.

yeah, I ran rankmirrors and did pacman -Syu. It wasn't until I pulled the new repos from Jimi's link that I could get newer builds.

Next question. How safe is Aur?

Very. Been running software from the AUR for months with no problems.

Plus, all the software on the AUR is voted on, so a program with lots of votes tends to be safe.

Thanks! I always feel a little weird when I use something from "questionable" sources. If you guys give Aur the thumbs up, it's good enough for me.

Last question for the day... (I hope!)

I installed the gnome-brave icon pack from gnome-look.org. I really love those icons and I used them in Ubuntu. It's kind of like an improved mist.

Anyway, when I changed it, it changed the gnomefoot in the main menu to this ugly pinwheel. I would like to change it to something else. Either back to the gnomefoot or a little arch icon.

Completed!

I got it. There was something in the gnome tweaks section of the arch wiki that told me how to do it. That wiki is great but there's a ton of info there that can suck if you don't know exactly what you're looking for.

AUR is an excellent resource to learn from. I never install packages from AUR directly, rather I examine the PKGBUILD for deps and build pointers before compiling my own packages. I'm sure you will get to that point sooner rather than later as one of the great strengths of Arch is the simplicity of the ABS (Arch Build System) . I might also recommend that you try a window manager. JWM is a very lightweight and feature-filled WM. I wrote most of the Arch Wiki entry on it, give it a go if and when you can.
