Opinion wanted for my AMD Build.

Thread Starter

Hey there. So I'd like to get your guy's opinion on my budget gaming build. I'll be dabbling into WoW and maybe some SC2 both at the HIGHEST settings possible. I wouldn't mind getting into other games but I will be getting back into WoW once my second HDD comes in.
I guess I can say I am just looking for yall's seal of approval

I already had the Athlon II x4 630 and a 4650 512mb but I ordered another video card to replace that one.

So far I have saved 100 bucks with the AII I already have.

Case : Rosewill DESTROYER
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811147144

Mobo : Biostar A880G+ Micro ATX
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813138283

PSU : OCZ 600W 80+ certified ModXStream-Pro Modular
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817341017

RAM : Mushkin Enhanced Essentials 2x2GB DDR3 1333 Dual channel
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820146748

HDD : Samsung Spinpoint F4 320GB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822152244

OD : Asus Sata DVD burner
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827135221

CPU : Athlon II X4 630
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103704

I ordered these six to complete the build with the existing two parts I already had. (AIIx4630,4650)
With that original plan it cost me 264.00 including shipping, promo codes, combo discounts and Instant rebates for a budget quadcore gaming rig.

Original plan...
was to hold off for a month then get a 212+ with an extra fan for PushPull.
Order a rebated 5850 or 6850
Order another F4 320GB for RAID 0
4 more Case fans for improved airflow
Fan controller to turn up the airflow to my case when I game.
Order a PWM splitter to run power to both fans for 212+ through molex and control them through the CPU Header.

But... this happened. I got impatient was in a now or never mood.....(these are rounded up including the shipping cost.) They will be arriving all next week. And they are 5 seperate orders.
Ordered the 212+ - $25

ordered 4 120mm Blue LED case fans + another blademaster - $40

Ordered another f4 320GB - $43
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822152244

Orderd the PWM splitter - $8
http://www.performance-pcs.com/catal...ducts_id=25413

Ordered Gigabyte 6850 + Sunbeam 4 fan channel fan controller - $198
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814125348
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811998808

So all in all my total cost was $578 could be a dollar or two lower since I rounded up.
I still have the $20 rebate from OCZ to send in as well.

I feel happy with my purchase, I got a quad core ready to be overclocked to 3.5 (its my goal OC), a 6850, 2 of the fastest Mechanical HDD to be put in a RAID 0 configuration, a sweet looking case that will be hovering with a blue aura

But I have a couple of questions though concerning all of this.

1 Is the 6850 overkill if I am gaming on a 19in 1280x1024 resolution Monitor?
2 Any suggestions for applying the thermal paste once my 212+ arrives?
3 Does this fan set up sound alright to yall?
Quote:
2 of the 2k RPM Blue LED I ordered for the side intake
2 2k RPM Blue LED I ordered for top exhaust.
I'll mount the existing stock top 1650 RPM fan on the bottom, leave the front stock blue LED fan 1200RPM for looks since it barely pushes any air in and leave the 2k RPM Stock back exhaust fan as is.
4 Will my Athlon II x4 630 bottle neck the 6850 or are they both around the same league?
5 Around what idle and load temps do you think I will get with an OC of 3.5 GHz with a pushpull config with the 212+?
6 I have been reading the reviews and every review that mentions RAID on the A880G+ says it is glitchy and does not function. If that is the case for my A880G+, any suggestions for a raid controller?

1) yes but get it if you plan to ever play more intensive games or get a new monitor
2) apply a small line to the middle of the heat pipes. so since its a 4 pip design you put 3 lines on the middle part (not directly on the pipe). It will spread as you put pressure
3) play around with what you have. fan placement is unique to every1
4) a quad core at 3.5 shouldnt bottle neck your gfx
5) cant comment dont know that chip at all
6) get a better board and if possible a better psu. Youll be glad you did afterwards

Almost none are parts I recommend, for these reasons:
1. Case is fine
2. Motherboard is good for budget builds; NOT for serious overclocking (95W+ processors) due to weak power phase
3. Many OCZ PSUs are garbage, especially that one
4. There are better choices for the price than generic 1333 CL9 memory
5. You can get an F3 500GB for that price on Superbiiz
6. You don't need a 24X DVD drive because most DVDs are only 16X max - and 22X is at least $5 cheaper
7. CPU is a C2 revision; you will want C3 for several reasons, i.e. memory compatbility, overclocking
8. That is one mightily expensive but simple cable, you wouldve been fine with voltage-based 3-pin control and a cheaper 3-pin splitter
9. ~$600 total budget should net you much, much better parts than those.

Lol I almost wanted to do the same thing but I figured I would just answer the questions he wanted answered. I second this thought as well

Well what is wrong with the mobo and the psu? I don't really see myself needing to upgrade to anything more than 4 gigs of ram. And as for the PSU, it has really good reviews and is modular. and isn't it a general rule of thumb that the heavier the psu is, the less crappy it is?

And thanks for the heads up.

No the heaver the psu doesnt mean its better necessarily. The parts inside are what makes it better. Get a corsair or seasonic. OCZ generally doesnt make good psus.

edit: also why are you buying microatx? The case will hold a normal board trust me youll be glad you got atx over micro if you saw them next to eachother

I'm sorry but this I had to lol at
Brand name/reliability is actually a major thing with PSUs; PSUs are the part you shouldn't skimp on. OCZ is usually overrated.

And guys, looks like fernandude has already made the purchases. Ah well, hopefully our input becomes useful in his next build.

I think he only bought the cpu and gfx so far as well as the stuff he bought on impule at bottom. At least I inferred he was asking for opinions on the board psu etc.

I really dont know what board to reccomend for you I need to get updated on the latest amd chipsets as I have been reading too much about p67 lol

Well at the time, i was on a TIGHT 300 budget. But 4 days later, 300 more smackeroos fell into my lap. I have no intentions of running Xfire or anything too serious, even now that my budget went from 300 to 600. Everything has already shipped as well. I already have the system up and running. The last 5 things I am waiting on.

EDIT: And here I thought I didn't skimp on the PSU lol. Oh and I'm taking this all positively Its just my first computer build and I feel pretty happy with it. Chances are I am just going to have more saved up for when bulldozer comes out. So I'll just recycle the crappy parts and make it into a HTPC.
