Ikea Build "Quality" Question

Thread Starter
Ended up getting a counter top and a pair of these (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40162496)

Was planning on screwing through the bottom "top" of these up into the counter top to hold it in place, however reading:
Quote:
Main parts: Particleboard, Fiberboard, Acrylic paint, ABS plastic
Filling material: Paper

Filling material??? This sort of makes me want to believe its hollow and filled with.. paper? Which would lead me to believe if I screwed through it it'd collapse on itself from the pressure.

Any ideas? It comes noon tomorrow and I'm unsure of what to do.

send it back, and goto a lumber yard?

The outer pieces should be fine, but the inner parts are merely pushed in using dowels.

Instead of wasting $99 shipping, logically, you would just attach it another way (Double sided industrial velcro, someone suggested on a totally unrelated "Ikea DIY")

I'm going to use them and I'm not going "goto a lumber yard".. Screwing is the best way to attach these two items, I'm asking if anyone has any experience with these types of products and / or suggestions.

Thanks for trying..

You'll be fine, I've drilled through the exact same thing. I stacked two ikea lack tv stands just like this, I had to drill through the top of one to connect the feet of the other. Bottom line is the paper filler is like wood, just not as strong.

Gotcha, I somehow thought it was just a small shell with literal light paper in there for some odd reason.

I guess if its pressed or whatever it should hold up to a screw going through it fine. Thanks and +rep!

Your response came off as being, well, unfriendly and unhelping.

Your typo only added to it... Not only is your response unhelpful, not thought out, or in the least way suggestive but the typo just finished it off as being "Lazy and unfriendly"

You're welcome.

The desk will hold. It won't break in half or anything, but I once got mad (not like the angry german kid) and smacked my fist on one of those tables I got a nice dent in it!

Currently building a desk ( 75 cm by 150 cm x2 in total 75 cm by 300 cm) and i've used 'real' wood ( 20 cm by 295 cm) with a thickness of half an inch to support all the weight. Maybe if you don't trust the strength of the desk but like the design this could be a cheap option to make it stronger. It costed me 15 eu (25$) in total.

Desk came, its BEAUTIFUL.

I'll take some pics when the sun comes up a little more, everything went together flawlessly.

Only thing I did different was instead of nailing / screwing the table on I just stuck it on the little risers that come with the small legs / shelves.

It doesn't move. At all. Tried shaking it and to even get a Mm of movement you REALLY need to put all your force into it.

Overall I'm very impressed, and I only came out spending $250 and slicing up a finger tongue.gif
