Surround Sound Headphone. A gimmick?

Thread Starter
Why do people say surround sound headphones is a gimmick? I recently purchased a Logitech g35. Sound quality is above average, and I can hear the surround sound. In games suck as Battlefield: Bad company 2, if i spin in circles I can hear the things rotating.

I am here to say, that at least with the G35's, the surround sound is not a gimmick.

EDIT: I feel like this should be in off topic section, could someone tell me how to move it?

It's considered a gimmick because any decent stereo headphone will give much better sound quality, and believe it or not better positional audio.

My DT-880s occasionally trigger a reflex that turns my head to check if something is behind me, and if I turn on Dolby headphone I can touch where the sound seems to be coming from, although the reverb slightly lowers audio quality (hard to explain).

Again the main reason though is sound quality. The small crunched together drivers on a 5.1 headphone will have less fidelity than large drivers on even an entry level Seinnheisser/AKG/ect headphone that costs the same price.

I see your point. One guy on OCN told me humans can't hear surround sound cause we only have two ears.... that was his reason why surround was a gimmick.

That holds true for headphones.

The G35 only has two drivers anyway, the same thing can be achieved by using a pair of stereo headphones with a sound card that does Dolby Headphone. Then you get your "surround sound" and better sound quality.

G35 is pretty much doing it thru Dolby headphone. Most times 5.1 headphones uses cheap drivers with two cheap sub drivers,They know people will buy it if they tag gaming to the title of the headphones.

I agree. I have some x41's and they are awesome gaming headphones. They do have issues and aren't perfect, but the surround sound on em sound good to me.

Two words... ASTRO A40... doesn't get any better than that.

I just picked up an MLG edition ASTRO A40 with mixamp for Christmas... I have it hooked up via TOSLINK to my Creative Fatal1ity Titanium Pro sound card; which enables true 5.1 surround sound via Dolby Digital Live encoding. All I can say is WOW! The sound quality is absolutely incredible, and perfect for positional sound in my game of choice at the moment (Black Ops PC). My only complaint is that the BASS isn't the best I have ever heard; but I have found that if I am listening to music I prefer the headset with DDL off anyways, which provides much clearer BASS.

Bottom Line:

Yes it is a gimmick.

I had to say that the same thing happens with both my AKG K702's and my ATH-AD700's. I think that's when you know you're getting a great soundstage.

About the spinning around and hearing the sound move around you, you get the same effect with normal headphones, more so with open backed cans.

Listen to this and you will hear what I mean:
