Memory w/ Sandy Bridge

Thread Starter
I'm sure this has been discussed to a certain extent, but I have a few specific questions.

I bought G-Skill Ripjaws 2000 Mhz and now I have realized that the P67 boards do not support it, but do support 2133 Mhz and 1866 Mhz. Therefore, my 2000 Mhz RAM will default to 1866 Mhz. Here are my questions:

1) Should I return my RAM and pick up some 2133 Mhz RAM?

2) Is it better to have higher speed or lower timing with SB CPU's?

Thanks!
Gideon

you can run it at 1833, then overclock the fsb to get the ram to around 2000
how are the timings on the 2000?
if its 9's or higher, return it for some with better timings
7's-8's should be alright

The timings are 9-10-9-28.

you can't touch the FSB lol.

i thought you just set the memory multiplier like any other motherboard.

7's? Surely you're kidding. I see two DDR3-2000 kits out of 44 on newegg with 8-9-8, everyone else is 9-9-9 and up. And those are expensive. You can get a 2x4 G-Skill Ripjaws 2000 Mhz for just $20 more than the 2x2 kit with 8-9-8 timings.

the fsb should overclock everything, unless its different on the sandy boards
the base ram speed options are 2133/1866/1600/1333/1066 iirc

im used to looking at 1600 rams tho, 9's might be alright numbers for 2000

overclocking by 7% shouldnt be asking much from those cpu's to do

So, does that mean it's best for me to get 2133 Mhz or higher RAM? Or will my 2000 Mhz Ripjaws perform just as well as the ones with higher speed?

I wouldn't bother. Does it overclock well? After a small voltage boost, you might be able to set the multiplier to 2133 and boost BCLK to 105 or so, and that gets you to 2250 MHz. Even native 2133 MHz RAM won't OC much higher than that. And 2000 MHZ RAM is cheaper.
