windows 7 upgrade or full?

Thread Starter
i have a disc for xp from my old desktop
i am going to build a new pc and will put windows 7 64bit on it
there is a full version and an upgrade version with a difference of £40
could i put xp on the pc and buy the upgrade then replace xp with 7?
also i think xp has sp2 if that makes a difference

You can only use the upgrade disc to go from Vista -> Windows 7, and you also cannot go from 32-bit to 64-bit without a clean install (I assume your XP installation is 32-bit).

So you're going to have to spend extra and get the full version, I'm afraid.

I hate upgrade installs. Always prefer to do a clean full install.

you can do a full install with the upgrade cd. Your serial key will work however you just need to edit the registery, there are millions of videos on youtube showing you how to do this save yourself some money

I'm pretty sure anything that bypasses the upgrade restrictions on the upgrade disc (be that upgrading from XP or using it for a clean install) breaks Microsoft's EULA.

I'm pre3tty sure the upgrade path from XP involves a clean install anyway, so tyhat's not an issue.
There's a good chance the xp disk you got with your old machine is an OEM version rather than retail, which I believe should "die" with that computer...but you certainly wouldn't be the first, or last, to ignore that bit of info

Alos, you you're a student - or know one, software for students do the win 7 pro x64 upgrade for £40!
